PORTALES, N.M.Katelyn West scored her first collegiate goal, while Melanie Peterson recorded her second-straight shutout to lead the Angelo State soccer team to a 2-0 victory against Eastern New Mexico at the ENMU Soccer Field in Portales, N.M., Sunday.

Angelo State (9-4-1, LSC 6-1-0) recorded its first goal in the 61st minute when Hanna Horeis ran down the right side and centered a ball to ASU's leading scorer Brandie DeBacker in the middle of the box. The junior then flicked the ball to the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season, while Horeis collected her fourth assist.

If one is good, two is better as the Rambelles tacked on an insurance goal in the 80th minute against Eastern New Mexico (3-11, LSC 0-7). Lauren Carnes had a touch pass to West who ripped the ball toward the Zias' goal. Although ENMU keeper Sierra Cardenas got a hand on it, the ball crept to the back of the net to give Angelo State a 2-0 victory.

"Katelyn hit a low, driven shot and it hit off the goaltender's chest and rolled back into the goal," said head coach Travis McCorkle. "I was really happy she was able to get a goal and it shows her hard work in practice is paying off."

Both team's registered three corner kicks and had 12 shots, but the 'Belles held a 5-3 advantage on shots on goal. Peterson recorded her sixth shutout of the season and the 14th of her career for ASU.

"Melanie had a great save in the second half," said McCorkle. "There was one she saved that was a pointblank shot and then she gave up a rebound but immediately smothered the rebound. Although this is a great feat for Melanie, it's a team effort and I couldn't be happier for our defensive effort this past week."

Up next for the 'Belles is a home match against Abilene Christian at the ASU Soccer Field on Friday at 4 p.m. For more information, log on to AngeloSports.com to get all the latest in ASU athletics.
