Brown Nets Game Winner for Second-Consecutive Match

Final Box

ADA, Okla. – Reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week Ashley Brown picked up right where she left off, netting two goals, including the game winner, to lead Angelo State past East Central, 3-2, in overtime Friday at Lady Tiger Field. The senior now has six goals this season, including three game winners.

Angelo State (11-5-1, 8-2-0 LSC) struck first when senior captain Shannon Dean passed the ball to Brown who received the touch in the box. The Harlan, Iowa native then drilled in a 10-yard shot from the right side in the 26th minute to give the Rambelles an early 1-0 advantage. East Central (5-10-2, LSC 1-8-1) tallied the next two goals and entered halftime with a 2-1 lead. The Tigers outshot the 'Belles, 6-3, in the first half.

“Our offense wasn't there in the first half,” said head coach Travis McCorkle. “They outworked us, but we made some adjustments and played our game in the second. We ended up outshooting them 15-4 in the second half and lead 19-11 for the game.”

East Central was awarded a penalty kick within the first eight minutes of the second half. ECU sophomore Carla Rodriquez stepped in for the free kick, however, ASU senior keeper Melanie Peterson lurked 12 yards away. Peterson, a Fort Worth native, turned away Rodriquez' kick and moment swayed in favor of the 'Belles. Angelo State capitalized on its own penalty kick in the 67th minute when sophomore Hanna Horeis rippled the nylon to tie the game, 2-2.

“That was a huge save by Melanie,” said McCorkle. “It gave us the momentum we needed and really picked up our offensive attack. Once we got a penalty kick, Hanna stepped up for us. We've been practicing PKs every single day the last two weeks and it's good to see she buried it.”

The ASU soccer team almost earned another victory in the final seconds when Brandie DeBacker chipped a ball just over the head of a wide open Brown with two seconds remaining in regulation. The duo made good on the second attempt in extra time as the 'Belles DeBacker crossed the ball to Brown, who put it past the keeper to give Angelo State a 3-2 overtime win. It was Brown's second-consecutive game-winning goal.

The 'Belles will dress up in their blue and gold on Sunday, as Angelo State looks to spook Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla., on Halloween for its final regular season match of the year. ASU will then complete in the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007, at a site yet to be determined.
