SAN ANGELO –
Brandie DeBacker scored her second goal of the season but it was not enough as the Angelo State soccer team fell to Texas-Permian Basin, 2-1, at UTPB Soccer Field Thursday evening.
Angelo State (2-2-1) got on the board first when DeBacker received a slip pass from
Lauren Carnes in the 34th minute of play. Once the junior corralled the ball, she used her left foot to guide the ball into the lower-left corner of the goal to go up 1-0.
“We went into halftime with a one-goal lead without playing our best soccer,” said head coach
Travis McCorkle. “We played with pretty good possession, but it's not where we want it to be.”
Texas-Permian Basin (3-2) tied the match up at 1-1 in the 59th minute when Saide Moya knocked in a rebound off Letha Irvin's failed attempt. The Lady Falcons tallied another goal just two minutes later when Lyndsey Thomas kicked a 20-yarder into the top-left corner, which proved to be the game winner.
“We just weren't able to finish the game,” said McCorkle. ”We had them down and we needed to take them completely out, but instead we allowed a few goals and weren't able to get the win. Now, we're going to regroup and work on a few things before we play Dallas Baptist.”
For the first time all season, Angelo State was outshot by its opponent, 18-7, and allowed more shots on goal, 8-3. ASU keeper
Melanie Peterson tallied two saves for the Rambelles.
After a day of rest, the 'Belles will travel to Dallas to battle Dallas Baptist at 7 p.m., Saturday at Patriot Field before returning home for a four-game home stand.
