DALLAS – Freshman Destin Connally scored her first collegiate goal, while
Melanie Peterson collected her third shutout of the season to lead the Angelo State soccer team past Dallas Baptist, 1-0 , in Dallas Saturday evening at Patriot Field.
After a scoreless first half, Angelo State (3-2-1) got on the board when Connally punched in the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute.
Karli Maxey crossed the ball to Connally, who made a diagonal run from behind and was able to head the ball low and near post.
“It was good to see such a young player anticipate the cross and beat the goaltender for the goal,” said head coach
Travis McCorkle. “You could see how excited Destin was and you couldn't be happier for her.”
Dallas Baptist (1-4) outshot the 'Belles, 9-3, but ASU's goalkeeper Peterson didn't allow a single ball reach the nylon, recording three saves and her 12th-career shutout. The senior fielded all shots cleanly, while directing the Angelo State backline into another solid defensive performance.
“Melanie made some good saves and the defense was solid as well,” said McCorkle. “One shot hit the crossbar and once the ball came off the post, Melanie recovered and made a great save. If she did get into trouble or find herself out of position her defenders would be there to back her up.”
The 'Belles will return home for a four-game home stand beginning with Lone Star Conference foe Incarnate Word on Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field. For more information, log on to AngeloSports.com.
