CANYON, Texas – No. 7 Angelo State experienced a thrilling 3-1 comeback win and disheartening 19-7 loss to No. 22 West Texas A&M on Saturday and are forced to win on Sunday to salvage a series split at Wilder Park.
The doubleheader split takes the Rams' overall record to 22-9 and to 6-5 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Buffs see their record moved to 22-7 overall and to a LSC-leading 9-2.
Ryan Greer highlighted the ASU offense on the day with a two-run homer in the win and a grand slam in the loss, while
Jake Feckley had the best day for the Rams' pitching staff.
"I want us to come out tomorrow with some pride and prove that the team that played that second game is not who we are," ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said.
Feckley (4-1) threw a complete-game and Greer hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning as the No. 7 Angelo State Rams took a 3-1 Lone Star Conference win over West Texas A&M in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Feckley struck out seven and managed through seven Buff hits for his first win since March 2 when the Rams topped Central Oklahoma 9-4. The sophomore from Wylie allowed one earned run in the first inning but settled in for his first complete game as a Ram and his most strikeouts in a game since striking out nine on Feb. 17 at Southeastern Oklahoma.
“I had great faith in Jake,” Brooks said. “He is a great competitor and had great stuff.”
Greer's home run over the left-center field fence was his second of the season and came with
Andrew LaCombe on second base. Greer, who was the Rams' leadoff hitter for the first time this season, has now driven in 25 runs and has 34 hits this season.
“It was the greatest feeling in the world coming through the team,” Greer said. “I was just looking for a fastball away and he gave it to me. Fortunately I had a good swing on it and the wind carried it over the fence.
Doug Snover added two hits and
Tate Allison had an RBI infield single in the seventh inning to score Snover. Snover had stolen his 11th stolen base of the season to get in scoring position. The Rams finished the game with four hits and zero walks in the game that lasted only one hour and 20 minutes.
Ryan Houston was the tough-luck loser in the game, going 7.0 innings where he struck out three and had the no-hitter going through 4.1 innings before Snover had a single. Kendall Boone led the Buffs with two hits in the loss.
“I told them that we were going to have to find a way to win this one ugly,” Brooks said. “We weren't taking great approaches, but you don't always have to play well to win. You just have to find some ways to make to some breaks and we did that.”
The Rams allowed double-digit runs for the first time this season in the loss and allowed the most runs to a West Texas A&M team since also giving up 19 on March 15, 2008.
James Conlee (2-1) claims the loss after allowing three hits and three runs in 1.0 innings of work. The Rams used a total of six pitchers in the game and allowed 15 hits and walked 11.
Quaid McKinnon,
Lee Neumann,
Doug Snover and
Andrew LaCombe each had two hits for the Rams who finished the game with 11 hits.
Parker Wood led the Buffs with two home runs and six RBI, while Jess Cooper added one home run and five RBI.
West Texas A&M scored its most runs against the Rams since beating ASU 19-18 in 2008. The Rams bounced back in the next game of that series with a 26-1 win. The 2-1 series lead by the Buffs is the first time ASU has been forced to win the finale to salvage a series against WT in the all-time series.
The Rams and Buffs return to Wilder Park to close out the series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
