CANYON, Texas – No. 7 Angelo State remained perfect on Sundays this season and salvaged a series split against No. 22 West Texas A&M with a 13-7 Lone Star Conference win over the Buffs at Wilder Park.
Toby Semler had four hits,
Zach Cohen four runs batted in and
Andrew LaCombe added three hits for the Rams who pounded out 16 hits in Sunday's contest against the Buffs. ASU (23-9, 7-5 LSC) moves to 5-0 this season in games played on Sunday and have still not lost a series this season. WT (22-8, 9-3) had 14 hits in the game but couldn't match the Rams' run production on the day.
“I really just wanted to see us compete today, and I was proud of the way we responded from yesterday's embarrassment,” Angelo State head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “We put the ball in play and made good things happen.”
ASU scored first for the first time this season in a LSC game when LaCombe unleashed a double off the center field fence to score
Doug Snover. The Rams would tack on another run in the third inning before exploding for six runs on five hits after WT had taken a 3-2 lead with three runs in the third. ASU has now scored in double-digits five times this season - with its highest run production game coming in its 16-3 win over Ouachita Baptist in the fourth game of the season. The Rams have now outscored opponents 61-21 in games played on Sunday.
Lange (4-0) earned the win, going 6.0 innings in his sixth start of the season. The junior out of Nebraska managed through 11 WT hits and five earned runs by striking out three, walking zero and coaxing seven ground outs. Michael Weatherly came in for the final three innings for the Rams, striking out four and walking only one. By comparison, the Rams' pitching staff walked 11 WT batters in the previous game.
“The main thing I was trying to do was keep the ball down and make them hit it on the ground,” Lange said. “After the loss yesterday, I could see it in everyone's eyes that we were going to come out and hit and get this win.”
Ryan Greer, hitting as the leadoff hitter for the third straight game, went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while
Brett Parsons and
Tate Allison also had two hits for ASU. Cohen's four RBI is his single-game high for the season and his career. Semler's four hits is his single-game career high after he had compiled five games of three hits.
Steven Diaz (1-2) claims the loss for the Buffs after allowing six runs in 3.0 innings, while Kendall Boone had three hits and four RBI to lead the WT offense. WT, which used seven pitchers in the game, committed five errors in the game on defense, while the Rams had only one.
