Rambelles earn 2-1 overtime win over West Texas A&M

SAN ANGELO – Sierra Anderson delivered the game-winning goal in the 97th minute of play to lift the Angelo State soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over West Texas A&M on Friday in a Lone Star Conference game at the ASU Soccer Field.

"It was a great feeling to get that goal and know that our hard work paid off," Anderson said. "Jordan (Benfield) sent in a great shot and I went in for the second ball and got the goal. It was a really exciting goal and win for us."

The Rambelles (7-3-1, 3-1-0 LSC) entered the game having lost two double-overtime games and tying another. The win, which was the sixth in seven games for ASU, ended after Jordan Benfield sent a shot in that hit WT's goalkeeper and bounced straight to Anderson who sent it to the back of the net for the win. The Lady Buffs fall to 1-2-1 in conference play with the loss.

"It's so frustrating to go into overtime and not come out with the win and we were not going to let that happen to us again," Benfield said. "This was a great win for us."

Cynthia Andrews scored the first goal for Angelo State in the 38th minute of the first half off an unassisted goal. Andrews broke free from the WT defense and deposited a shot past a charging goalkeeper for the first goal of her career.

ASU led 1-0 at halftime, but Marissa Naab tied the game at 1 with a goal 19 minutes into the second half. The Rambelles had lost double-overtime games this season to Ouachita Baptist and Fort Lewis after opening the season with a 1-1 tie at New Mexico Highlands.

This time it would be the Rambelles celebrating in extra time though.

After a penalty kick was missed by Andrews and Lauren Perry hit the crossbar on a hard shot from 20-yards out, Anderson struck for the game-winner after Benfield sent ball in. The goal was Anderson's fourth of the season which ties Selena Alvarez for the team lead. It is also the second overtime goal of Anderson's career after she also scored the game-winner last season in a double-overtime win over New Mexico Highlands.

Angelo State goalkeeper Dani Edwards finished the game with three saves, while WT keeper Yvette Bedoy had five saves in the game. Katie Squires, Haley Mendel and Selena Alvarez also had shots on goal for the Rambelles in the game. ASU finished the game with a 9-6 shot advantage.

The Rambelles return to action at 2 p.m. on Sunday against Eastern New Mexico at the ASU Soccer Field.

"We're hoping to carry this over to the Sunday game," Benfield said. "We want to get another home game win and show our fans that we are ready to play strong. We don't want to win just one game and say that the second game won't count for anything. We want to win two in a row."
