SAN ANGELO – Jenny Kotowych scored three goals to help lead Angelo State to a 4-1 Lone Star Conference win over Texas Woman's on Friday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (9-3-1, 5-1-0 LSC) has now won three consecutive games and eight of their last nine. ASU's defense stifled TWU throughout the first half as the Rambelles outshot the Pioneers 7-0 in the first half.
"We played as close to perfect as possible in the first half," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "If you're trying to get results in the game, that's the way to start a game. We were committed to winning."
The hat trick from Kotowych is the first three-goal game of the season for an ASU player this season, while
Sierra Anderson opened scoring with her sixth goal of the season. It was the first hat trick for the program since
Maggie Schaffer scored three goals in a 5-0 win over Texas-Permian Basin on Sept. 6, 2011. Â
"I was just doing what we've been working on in practice by making runs and working off the other forwards and outside mids," Kotowych said. "We really wanted to come out and get this win after we lost to them the first time."
ASU has now outscored its opponents 22-9 this season and has not allowed more than two goals through its first 13 games of the year.
"We did a great job of battle for and keeping possession," ASU junior
Caitlyn Conaway said. "We've been working really hard on our communication and it showed today. We are very excited about where we are at but there's still a lot of work to do."
Sierra Anderson struck first with an assisted goal from
Brianne Brown just four minutes into the game. Anderson, who now has a team-leading six goals, scored the goal with a low-post shot with her left foot. Kotowych continued the first-half scoring with a goal 20 minutes later after breaking away from the defense on a 25-yard dash before depositing the ball into the net. Her next goal came after a corner kick was sent in by
Kelli Regan and was directed towards the goal by
Katie Squires who assisted on the goal.
Kotowych, who also had two first-half goals in a 3-0 win over Wayland Baptist, now has five goals in her freshman season. Brown has three assists this season with all three coming in the last two games. Her first assist was last Sunday on Anderson's double-overtime game-winner against Eastern New Mexico. Kotowych's third goal of the game came in the 79th minute of play off Brown's second assist of the game. The shot came from within five-yards out from the left side of the goal and hit the right-side of the net.
"We've been challenging our forwards in practice and games to put themselves in a more attacking position," McCorkle said. "They did that in this game."
Â
ASU had a 12-4 shot advantage in the game and with seven different players taking shots. Squires and Brown had two shots each, while
Kelli Regan had another.
Â
Dani Edwards and
Shantel Wittke split the game in goal for the Rambelles with Edwards playing the first 45 minutes and Wittke closing out the game. Edwards did not face a shot, while Wittke had two saves.
The ASU win evened the season-series after TWU took a 2-1 win over the Rambelles on Oct. 6 in Denton. The Pioneers (4-8-2, 1-4-1 LSC) scored to end ASU's shutout in the 80th minute of play off a goal from Lauren Smith who gathered in a pass from Brooke Hill.
Angelo State returns to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Texas A&M-Commerce. The Rambelles won the first meeting of the season against the Lions 1-0 in Commerce on a
Selena Alvarez goal and shutout from Edwards.
