Rambelles, Zias play to scoreless Lone Star Conference draw

PORTALES, N.M. – The Angelo State soccer team played a scoreless Lone Star Conference draw against Eastern New Mexico on Friday at the ENMU Soccer Field.

The Rambelles (10-3-2, 6-1-1 LSC) are now 2-2-2 in overtime games this season and take their season series against the Zias (4-5-5, 1-2-4 LSC) to 1-0-1 after taking a 1-0 double-overtime win at home two weeks ago. ASU is now 9-1-1 in its last 11 games going into a 2 p.m. game on Sunday at West Texas A&M in Canyon.

"I thought we played well in the first half and were able to dominate in possession and shots," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "We made an adjustment in the second half to try and get one more player forward. It was a good adjustment even though it put more pressure on our defense. They did a good job of maintaining the shutout. We still need to work on our passing and up front and we needed to be ready to put it on frame. We missed about three opportunities in the first half to put the game away."

Dani Edwards finished the game with two saves in a game where the Rambelles held the Zias to five total shots. ASU had a 12-5 shot advantage and a 7-2 shots on goal lead. The shutout was Edward's sixth of the season and the seventh time ASU has not allowed a goal.

Maggie Schaffer and Jenny Kotowych led the Rambelles with three shots each, while Katie Squires, Caitlyn Conaway, Jordan Benfield and Kathleen Keoughan also had shots.

"It's good that we get a point and sweep the series against Eastern with a win and a draw," McCorkle said. "But we want to make sure that we keep things in control of our own hands and that's our primary focus with our two games remaining."

The overtime session was the 10th of the season for the Zias who tied an NCAA Division II record for ties in a season. ENMU is 0-5-5 this season when stretched past regulation.

The scoreless game was only the second time this season ASU has not scored a goal in a game with the last time coming in a 0-1 double-overtime loss to Fort Lewis on Sept. 13. The Rambelles are now 4-1-2 on the road this season.
