CANYON – Kathleen Keoughan took a deflected ball off the crossbar and sent it into the net with 4:45 to play to give Angelo State a 1-0 Lone Star Conference win over West Texas A&M on Sunday at "The Pitch" at Buffalo Sports Park.
The Rambelles (11-3-2, 7-1-1 LSC) clinched at least a share of their first conference championship in program history with the win and will now need a win or a tie against Midwestern State on Friday at the ASU Soccer Field to claim the outright title. ASU, which has seven shutouts this season, has 22 points in the conference standings with MSU at 19 points following a 2-0 win over Eastern New Mexico on Sunday.
The Rambelles are now 10-1-1 in their last 12 games and improved to 5-1-2 on the road this season.
"All of our players are committed to doing whatever they need to do to help us win," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "They played with a lot of intensity this weekend and never gave up.
Keoughan, who had not scored since her two-goal opening weekend to the season, had the late-game heroics by gathering in the ball after fellow freshman
Jenny Kotowych hit the crossbar in the final five minutes of regulation. The shot, which was the ninth of the day for the Rambelles, went to the lower right portion of the goal and the ASU defense didn't give WT a clean shot the rest of the way.
"It was really exciting because we had been chipping away at them the entire game and to get that goal was a great feeling," Keoughan said. "Finally we had a break with Jordan (Benfield) sending in a free kick and Jenny hitting a great shot that hit the crossbar. I was just there to finish it."
Dani Edwards recorded her seventh shutout of the season and the 16th of her career. The senior, who has earned the LSC Defender of the Week honor the past two weeks and is the reigning LSC Goalkeeper of the Year, finished the game with two saves.
"We did a great job of communicating on defense today," ASU defender
Caitlyn Conaway said. "
Lauren Perry did a great job of stepping up and played great. Dani did a great job of directing us and coming out and getting some balls to help us out. It was a lot of doing the little things right."
Angelo State had a 4-2 shots on goal advantage in the game with Keoughan having two shots on goal and Anderson and
Brianne Brown adding the other two. ASU finished the game with nine total shots with
Maggie Schaffer,
Kelli Regan,
Haley Mendel and
Jenny Kotowych having shots. The win over WT came a day after a scoreless draw at Eastern New Mexico.
"I felt like we didn't do a great job on set pieces and corner kicks on Friday against Eastern and we needed to improve in those areas," McCorkle said. "We needed to be more dangerous in those situations and I challenged them to make a difference. KK (Keoughan) was strong and didn't let anyone push her off her position. She went in there and finished with great technique after maintaining her position."
WT fell to 1-5-2 in conference play with the loss.
