Rams, Texans Split Saturday Doubleheader at Foster Field

GAME ONE BOX  //  GAME TWO BOX

SAN ANGELO –
Jake Feckley threw a one-hit shutout and was rewarded for his efforts with a Reggie Rodriguez walk-off hit in a 1-0 Lone Star Conference win over Tarleton State in Saturday's doubleheader opener, but the Texans responded with a 4-2 win over the Rams in the nightcap for a split at Foster Field.

ASU (26-15, 10-9 LSC) and Tarleton State (25-12-1, 14-5 LSC) will conclude their series at 1 p.m. on Sunday which will also be Senior Day in the Rams' home finale of the season. Tarleton State leads the series 2-1 after also winning Friday's series opener.

Feckley (7-3) struck out five and walked only two Texans in a 92-pitch gem where he faced only 25 batters in the seven-inning game. The junior from Wylie recorded four 1-2-3 innings in the game and gave up his lone hit on a Jared Musgrove leadoff single in the third inning.

“I had all four of my pitches today and was able to locate them where I wanted to,” Feckley said. “I left a couple of breaking balls up, but they didn't do anything with them. I just felt comfortable throughout the game and was in a great rhythm.”

The Rams finished the game with five hits with none bigger than Rodriguez's two-out RBI double to score Andrew LaCombe and end the game. Rodriguez also made two charging diving catches on line drives to assist Feckley in his dominant performance. The walk-off hit was the second of the season for Rodriguez who hit a walk-off home run against Lubbock Christian earlier this season.

“He had two great diving plays in the outfield and then came through for us with the big hit,” Feckley said. “I gave him a huge hug when as soon as I could get to him. It's a different ball game if he didn't make those catches in the outfield. He was due at the plate after how great he was in the field all day.”
Ryan Greer, Christian Summers and Tyler Coughenour also had hits for the Rams in the game along with Rodriguez and LaCombe who led off the seventh with an infield single. ASU only committed one error in the game.

Landon Thompson (0-1) received the loss for the Texans after giving up two hits and the winning run in relief. Pete Perez wnet six innings in the start, striking out seven and allowing only three hits before Thompson came in for the final inning.

The Rams were unable to carry the momentum from the win into the second game as errors crept back into the picture. ASU committed four errors in the 4-2 loss where both teams had seven hits.

Mike Weatherly (4-3) receives the loss for the Rams after striking out two and allowing two earned runs on five hits.
Greer drove in both Angelo State runs with a third-inning triple to left field which scored Rodriguez and David Goggin who each had one-out singles. Greer now has two triples and 17 RBI in his senior season. Lee Neumann, LaCombe and Coughenour also had hits in the game for the Rams.

Miguel Ramirez (6-1) earned the complete-game win by striking out nine and scattering seven hits. He only walked two  in the game and benefited from a Rustin Thomas two-run home run in the third inning to open scoring and a Matt Olive RBI single in the fourth.

“We competed hard, but it was the same mistakes we keep making,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said.
Michael Lange is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rams on Sunday. Lange (3-2) is the reigning LSC Diamond Pitcher of the week after strong six-inning performances in a win over St. Mary's and a no-decision against ENMU. The senior from Columbus, Neb. by way of Gateway Community College is 12-3 in his career at ASU and is coming off a junior season where he was named first-team all-region and first-team all-conference. Lange has 85 career strikeouts in 118.2 innings of work and will be making his 21st start of his career.

“He needs to come out and throw strikes and hit his spots,” Brooks said. “They can hit so he needs to keep the ball in the ball park and let his defense play for him. That's when he's at his best and we need that from him.”
