ASU (30-16, 14-10 LSC) won the series 3-1 after taking the final three games following an 8-3 loss in the opener on Friday. Cameron (12-29, 6-18 LSC) outhit the Rams 16-10 in the game, but also committed three errors and stranded seven runners on base. The Rams, who are now 17-5 on the road this season, have now won 30 games or more in eight of the nine seasons since the program was started in 2005.
“I'm proud of the guys for coming back and competing after losing on Friday and coming back and winning the next three,” said ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks. “I thought we put together quality at-bats and we pitched well. We were consistent in our approaches and we competed.”
LaCombe had two hits and four RBI in the game, including a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Rams a 3-0 lead. ASU held that margin until McKinnon delivered a two-run single in the fourth to make it 5-0. Cameron answered back with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth, but the Rams would answer back with one in the fifth and two in the sixth with RBI from McKinnon,
Lee Neumann and LaCombe.
Mike Weatherly (5-3) earned the win after coming into the game in the fourth inning for starter
Michael Lange. Weatherly, who started Saturday's opener but was taken out after one inning and an 11-0 lead, struck out four and gave up only one run in 3.2 innings on Sunday. Lange also went 3.2 innings, striking out two and surrendering four runs on eight hits.
“That ended up being pretty big for us to have Mike available to throw for us today,” Brooks said. “He came in right away and did what we needed him to do. He was throwing strikes and not letting them get hits.”
Brown recorded the first save of his career by coming into the game in the ninth inning and striking out two after Cameron had scored two runs on three hits. The two CU runs were charged to
Austin Church after an error and walk put two runners on base and no outs. The Aggies, down 9-7 coming into the final inning, scored on RBI singles by Thomas Galvin and Kevin Wakau.
Ryan Greer,
Christian Summers,
David Goggin and
Tanner Kalina also had hits for the Rams. Summers hit a double in the sixth inning the opposite way for his 14th double of the season which ties him with LaCombe for the team lead.
Angelo State hit .352 in the series against the Aggies with Neumann leading the way with nine hits, eight RBI and three home runs. Goggin went 7 for 12 to lead the team with a .583 batting average, while LaCombe finished the series with six RBI. Sunday's appearance was Brown's second of the weekend. He finished the series with four strikeouts in two innings of relief.
The Rams conclude their regular season next week with a four-game series against Abilene Christian in Abilene.
