Rambelles fall in double overtime on penalty kick following handball call

Brianne Brown
SAN ANGELO – A handball call in the 102nd minute of play gave Fort Lewis College's Sam Weiss a penalty kick from 12 yards out in a scoreless game which she sent into the net for the game-winning goal against Angelo State on Friday at the ASU Soccer Field.

The Rambelles (1-2-1) have gone into overtime in three of their four games this season with both of their loses coming in double overtime. ASU will now host Colorado Mesa at noon on Sunday before the team plays its next six games on the road.

"We did a great job of dealing with their speed and we had a lot of players step up and play well," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "I felt like our team played intelligently and hard throughout the game, but we just weren't able to get that goal we needed to win. I'm proud of the girls. Even though we are leaving the field with a loss, I feel like our performance was good."

Angelo State finished the game with 16 shots to Fort Lewis' seven shots and had six players take those shots. Sierra Anderson led the Rambelles with nine shots, while Brianne Brown and Selena Alvarez had two shots each. The Rambelles have now outshot their opponents 53-30 this season but have only five goals to show for their offensive pressure.

"We have to start finishing," McCorkle said. "We had a good game tonight and took some good steps forward. But we have to get goals and win these games. We did really well in every component of the game besides scoring which cost us the game."

Dani Edwards played the entire game in goal for Angelo State, finishing with four saves before the penalty kick.

On the other end of the field, FLC goalkeeper Caitlyn Espinosa recorded 11 saves. Megan Striedel and Weiss each had two shots each for the Skyhawks who improve to 4-0 on the season with the win.
