Brianna Sotello had a career night with 20 kills and 21 digs to help lead the Belles to a 3-1 non-conference win over St. Edward's on Friday at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
The Belles (15-5) improved to 7-1 in non-conference matches with the win over the Hilltoppers (14-4) who play out of the Heartland Conference. ASU has now won three straight matches and is now 3-1 against Heartland opponents this season. Sotello, who had a previous career-high with 15 kills and 10 digs, finished the night with a .231 attacking percentage and
Alexa Johnson led the offense with 45 assists from the setter position.
"The team played great defense and served tough when It mattered most," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "Brianna passed well, attacked aggressively and played strong defense. Alexa made good decisions on the court tonight also."
Zoey Hanrahan added 11 kills and five blocks, while
Shelby Wilt led the defense with 27 digs and Johnson provided 20 digs.
Katie MacLeay added 13 digs and
Brooke Robertson had 12 digs for the Belles who finished the night a 109-98 dig advantage on the night.
ASU got off to a strong start with the 25-20 first-set win with Sotello and Harrion leading the way with four kills each, while Johnson had 13 assists and Wilt provided eight digs. The Hilltoppers responded to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win over the Belles in the second set before ASU reclaimed commend to control to take the four-set win.
The Belles return to Lone Star Conference play at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville in their final regular-season road match of the year. ASU is 1-0 against the Javelinas this season after earning a 25-22, 26-24, 25-21 sweep back on Sept. 20 at the Junell Center. After Saturday's match in Kingsville, ASU will complete the regular season with a five-match home stand which will begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Texas-Permian Basin before it hosts West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico next weekend.Â
