Belles earn first win of season with 72-64 victory over CSU-Pueblo

SAN ANTONIO – Jasmine Caston scored 26 points and added six rebounds and four steals to help lead the Angelo State women's basketball team to a 72-64 non-conference win over Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday in the first game of the St. Mary's Classic at the Greehey Arena.

The Belles (1-4) earned their first win of the season and will return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday against St. Mary's in a rematch of a season-opening game the Rattlers won 74-60 at the Tarleton State Invitational.

"I was most happy with our team's focus and intensity for 40 minutes," ASU head coach Cayla Petree said. "Today is the first time we have put together two good halves and really played team basketball. Pueblo is a really good team and we beat them because we played together and not as individuals. We have to continue to get better each day."

Caston, who came into the game averaging 14.5 points per game which included a previous season-high 23 points against St. Mary's, scored her career-high 26 points against CSU-Pueblo (2-2) by shooting 11-for-18 from the field and hitting two 3-pointers. Caston, who had 19 of her points in the second half, also added three assists and had two offensive rebounds. Jackie Patterson added 14 points and five rebounds for the Belles in her third double-figure scoring game of the season, while Diamalises Rivera led ASU with seven rebounds and also had four points in the win.

Amanda Weaver, who led the Belles with nine points at halftime, finished the game with 11 points and Shauna Coleman also had 11 points. Coleman, a freshman from Lipan, has now scored in double-figures the past three games along with Weaver who hit a team-leading three 3-pointers in the game.

Angelo State, which led 32-25 at halftime, finished the game shooting 45.9 percent from the field and limited the ThunderWolves to 37.9 percent shooting and forced 12 turnovers. The Belles saw their seven-point halftime lead quickly disappear as CSU-Pueblo started the second half on a 10-0 run which had ASU trailing 37-32 before Patterson hit a layup which was followed by a Caston layup to trim the new-found deficit to one. ASU reclaimed the lead for the first time after losing it at 42-41 on a Caston layup and extended their margin to 48-43 on a Coleman layup. The lead never escaped ASU again during the afternoon as the team led by 11 before a late CSU-Pueblo 3-pointer established the final eight-point margin for the Belles.

The Belles finished the game shooting 11-for-14 from the free-throw line, while CSU-Pueblo missed seven of its 16 shots from the line. Ashley Piper led the ThunderWolves with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Katie Nehf added 19 points and Angie Moore contributed 13 for the ThunderWolves who fell 51-43 to St. Mary's on Friday.
