Feckley establishes new program career wins record in 5-1 victory over Chaps

LUBBOCK – Angelo State senior Jake Feckley became the all-time winningest pitch in program history after striking out seven and keeping his earned run average at zero through three starts in a 5-1 win over Lubbock Christian on Friday at Hays Field.

Feckley (3-0) improved to 18-8 in his career at ASU and remained dominant through 21.1 innings of work this season. A two-time Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week after the first two weeks of the season, he scattered five hits and didn't allow an earned run against the Chaps (3-4) in eight innings of work.

"I just went out there today trying to throw strikes and get outs," Feckley said. "I knew our offense was going to pick me up if I could keep us in the game and they did. I'm feeling really confident right now in my pitches and in our defense. They are picking me up and our offense has been doing a great job of getting runs."

David Goggin drove in three runs in the game, first with an RBI single for the game's first run in the third inning and then a two-RBI single to center field to start a three-run seventh inning for the Rams. Goggin's seventh inning single scored Blake Bass who led off with a walk and Nehwon Norkeh who hit a one-out single to left field. Tyler Coughenour, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a Hunter Choate sacrifice fly to right field after he stole third base to set up the run and give ASU a 4-1 lead. Goggin finished the game 2-for-3 and also reached base by being hit by a pitch.

"He was doing a good job of getting in good counts to get balls to drive," said ASU head coach Kevin Brooks of Goggin. "He was using the whole field and taking good swings. It was a hard day to hit and he did a great job of catching Jake too, so his performance was big for us."

ASU did not commit an error behind Feckley against the Chaps who put together multiple threats which Feckley fought through. In the third inning, LCU's Wade Stramp led off with a single and moved to third on a Brett Kauten double. With runners on second and third with no outs, Feckley popped up the next batter to Goggin behind the plate before fielding a grounder back to the mound and then striking out the final batter. The Chaps would score the first run of the season off Feckley in the sixth inning after a base runner advanced to third on a passed ball and was brought in on a sacrifice fly, but he limited the damage.

"I thought he single-handily put us on his back to get this win," said Brooks of Feckley. "He came out ready to pitch and competed like crazy out there. He threw great and was just awesome again for us. He has been a very consistent pitcher for us for a really long time. He is continuing to get better which is exciting to see."

Derek Tyner added the final ASU run of the game in the eighth inning with a single to right-center field to score Christian Summers who led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. Norkeh scored two runs in the game and Coughenour added two stolen bases to take his team-leading stolen base total to seven.

Feckley, who walked only one Chap on Friday, is now 18-8 in his career at Angelo State after transferring from Texas A&M following his freshman season. He passed Joseph Key (2006-09) and Kenny Elkind (2008-09) on the all-time wins list to establish the program's new record. A Wylie native, he now has 131 strikeouts in 160.2 innings of work and also has three saves to his name.  With his seven strikeouts on Friday, he passed Michael Gunter (2007-09) for third on the all-time strikeout list.

"It's an amazing feeling to achieve a record like that," Feckley said. "God has blessed me with a gift and the opportunity to play here and I couldn't think of a better team to share it with."

Angelo State's 6-0 record matches the 2012 team's start to the season which is the program record. The win keeps the Rams as the only undefeated team in the Lone Star Conference this season. ASU is hitting .343 and limiting opponents to a .192 batting average through six games and didn't commit an error on Friday for the second consecutive game.

The two teams will meet for the second game of the series at 2 p.m. with Angelo State's Jason Zgardowski set to make his first start of the season on the mound. The series final is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday with Trae Davis starting for the Rams.
