Rams take first loss of season in 10-9 extra-inning decision at Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK – Lubbock Christian's Joel Lutz hit a two-out walk-off home run to lift the Chaps to a 10-9 win over the Angelo State baseball team in 10 innings to even the three-game series and hand the Rams their first loss of the season on Saturday at Hays Field.

ASU (6-1) and the Chaps (4-4) will conclude the non-conference series at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Trae Davis (1-0) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Rams, while Tim Carlson (0-1) is the probable starter for the Chaps.

"It was a really good college baseball game and showed how great our sport is," ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. "It was a fun game for the fans to watch, unfortunately we weren't the team that got the win today. I thought our guys did a great job of coming out ready to play and got after it the whole game. We never gave up and that was good to see. We did make some mental mistakes that didn't show up as errors, but are plays that we need to learn from and make the next time around."

Dillon Becker (1-1) received the loss for the Rams after surrendering Lutz's home run which ended the Saturday slugfest. Lutz's walk-off was a two-out solo shot to left field with two strikes and was a similar situation to last season when ASU's Reggie Rodriguez hit a walk-off home run to beat the Chaps in the second game of the series at Foster Field.  The game featured 27 combined hits, including 11 from the Rams who scored four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at six and then two more in the eighth to take a 9-8 lead. LCU responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth to set up extra innings and Lutz's home run.

Christian Summers led the Rams by going 2-for-5 at the plate, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning to help ASU tie the score at six after it had fell behind by four runs. Summers, who now has three career home runs at ASU and also had a ninth-inning single, drove in Goggin and Tyler Coughenour on the homer. Hunter Choate and Brett David each added two hits, with David hitting two doubles to boost his season double total to five through seven games.

The Rams took a 9-8 lead in the top of the eighth inning when Nehwon Norkeh drove in Rodriguez on a ground out to second base and Cameron Massengill scored on an LCU error.

Jason Zgardowski did not receive a decision in his first start as a Ram after allowing four runs on five hits in 3.0 innings of work. Miles Gully also surrendered four earned runs in the game in 1.1 innings of early relief work, while Jamie MacLean struck out four and didn't allow a run in 2.0 innings. Becker, who made his fourth appearance of the season, allowed only two hits in 2.2 innings.
