G1 BOX SCORE: Texas A&M-Kingsville 8, Angelo State 0G2 BOX SCORE: Texas A&M-Kingsville 14, Angelo State 4 (7 innings)KINGSVILLE – The Angelo State baseball team dropped its 10th consecutive road game after falling 8-0 and 14-4 on Saturday against Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Nolan Ryan Field.
ASU (25-22, 14-18 LSC) was swept in a conference series for the third time this season and now finds itself in fourth place in the LSC standings behind the Javelins (33-14, 23-9 LSC), West Texas A&M (32-15, 20-12 LSC) and Tarleton State (25-21, 14-17 LSC). The Rams will travel to Portales, N.M. next weekend where they play fifth-place Eastern New Mexico (24-23, 13-19 LSC) in a three-game set which ends the regular season. The Rams are 3-1 against the Greyhounds this season after winning the first series of the season against ENMU earlier this season at Foster Field.
The Javelinas took the first game 8-0 on Saturday after they struck for five runs in the first inning and held the Rams to four hits in the game. The second game was shortened to seven innings with the Javelinas run-ruling ASU and sweeping the three-game set. TAMUK improved to 6-1 against the Rams this season and remain atop the conference standings entering the final weekend of play where it travels to play three games at Tarleton State.
Jason Zgardowski (4-5) took the loss in the first game after allowing five earned runs on four walks and three hits in 1/3 of an inning. He was relieved in the first inning by
Jake Albert who saw two more Javelina runs score on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Erik Monson went 3 2/3 innings of relief for ASU with one strikeout and limited TAMUK to one run, while
Jamie MacLean recorded the final two outs of the bottom of the sixth.
The four ASU hits were all singles off the bat of
JP Zapata,
Brett David,
Cameron Massengill and
Reggie Rodriguez. Denver Diefenbach (9-2) walked only one to go along with the four hits in a complete-game win over the Rams.
Ryan Guedry and Justin Lee each had 2-for-3 performances at the plate for the Javelinas, while James Black went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Lee led TAMUK with three RBI in the game, while Taylor Taska added two hits and stole a base.
Jake Feckley (5-4) took the loss in the series finale after surrendering eight earned runs on 10 hits and two walks against the Javelinas in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Dillon Becker allowed two runs in 2/3 innings of relief and
Graylon Brown saw three runs score on one hit in 2/3 innings on the mound.
Mason Leavitt recorded seven outs without allowing a run and only one hit.
Christian Summers,
Cameron Massengill and
Blake Bass combined for six of ASU's eight hits in the second game. Summers went 2-for3 with a triple and Bass hit his second home run of the season and added a single. Rodriguez and Massengill had RBI for the Rams who were limited to five runs in the three games this weekend.
Matt Rhodes (6-3) earned the win after limiting the Rams to three runs on six hits in a five-inning start for TAMUK before Tres Tyler and Hayden James threw an inning each of relief. Taska led the Javelina offensive production, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and hit his seventh home run of the season. Matt Perez added three hits on three hits and Derrick Walls, Brian Frazier and Black each had two RBI.
The Rams are now 9-14 on the road this season entering the final weekend of the regular season. ASU was outscored 24-5 in the series against TAMUK.
