SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State volleyball team swept Cameron (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
The Belles second sweep of the week moved them to 17-4 on the season and 6-1 in the conference. The win kept ASU undefeated at the Junell Center and marked its11th sweep for the year. The Cameron Aggies are now 13-3 and 4-3 in the LSC. Â
"We came out this weekend and played two opponents pretty well," said head coach Chuck Waddington. "We played pretty clean on our side of the net and that is what we were trying to work on all week long, and we are going to continue to do that."
ASU sophomore Brianna Sotello had a strong game marking her second consecutive double-double and 10th on the season. She recorded 13 digs, fired in a season high 22 kills, and added a service ace for a .487 attack percentage on the afternoon. Mallory Blauser tallied 12 kills of her own for her sixth game in a row and 15th on the season with double digit kills.
Maggi Jo Keffury once again did an outstanding job dishing out the ball for the Belles. She had 42 assists and 13 digs for the day. The senior's double-double was her eighth on the season and is second on the team in this category. Â
The Belles defense was led by Katie MacLeay with 24 digs. This was the libero's 13th match of the season with over 20 digs. The defense also received contributions from freshman Micheala Sifuentes who added eight digs and Kelly Hasbrouck who had six more.
Morgan Seaton got the Belles rolling in the first set with two consecutive kills. The Aggies would battle back to tie the set at 3-3 when Sotello would drop in a kill to take the lead. ASU would not look back in this set retaining the lead throughout with Zoey Hanrahan, Keffury and Blauser adding key kill shots. The Belles would take the set 25-15 off of an Aggie attack error. Â Â
With a 1-0 match lead ASU and Cameron would again trade runs. Tied at seven, Keffury would set up Sotello to drop in a kill that would get the Belles rolling on a 7-1 run. With a 24-20 lead Hanrahan and Blauser would put the finishing touch on the set with a block, and ASU would head into intermission with a 2-0 match lead.
Coming out of the break Cameron would not go down without a fight. The two teams exchanged points throughout the set with the Aggies taking a 22-20 lead. An attack error by Cameron would place the ball back in the hands of Angelo State. Keffury and Sotello would hook up for four of the final five points giving the Belles its second sweep of the week. Angelo State returns to the Junell Center to take on Texas A&M - Commerce Friday, October 15 @ 7 p.m. for its annual Dig Pink match in honor of breast cancer awareness month. Â
