SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State Rams finished the regular season with a 24-5 record at home after splitting a doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday and will go into the Lone Star Conference as the third seed at next week's tournament which will be hosted at Texas A&M-Kingsville for the second straight season.
The Rams (34-15, 21-14 LSC) opened the final day of the regular season by earning a 3-2 win behind a 12-strikeout performance by
Blake Bass (9-2) and a two-RBI performance from
J.C. Snyder before the Greyhounds (16-30, 11-21 LSC) took an 8-3 win in the second game. ENMU finished fifth in the LSC standings and had its season end on Saturday, while the Rams will now play West Texas A&M in the first round of the tournament at 11 a.m. on Thursday. WT and TAMUK both swept this weekend and are regular-season co-champions, but the Javelinas own the tiebreak and will host four-team double elimination tournament at Nolan Ryan Field.
"I like our chances going into the postseason," ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. "We have to correct some little things and become more consistent, but I really believe in this team and think we are capable of bringing it all together. We're looking forward to getting going with this on Thursday. I've felt like we were the best team in the conference all year, but we didn't play like it to win the regular-season championship. Now we get a chance to go do it at the tournament."
Bass established a career-high with his 12 strikeouts which he stacked up in only five innings of work. A senior right-hander, Bass now has 91 strikeouts this season which ranks second in program history while his nine wins are the most in the LSC this season. Bass did not walk a batter and allowed only one run on four hits in his 15th start of the season.
"Blake was really awesome for us today," Brooks said. "He was hitting his spots and remained efficient throughout the time he was out there for us. That's the performance you want to see from him going into the postseason."
Graylon Brown came on in the sixth inning and would close out the game and earn his 10th save of the season after coaxing a fielder's choice out at second base with the bases loaded. The 10 saves by Brown are a new program record as he passes Mike Weatherly who had held the single-season saves record since 2012.
Snyder, who provided the game-winning runs in Friday's win, came through again on Saturday with an RBI single through the right-side of the infield in the third inning and then the third run of the game for the Rams when he doubled to center field to score
Paxton DeLaGarza who had reached on an error. Snyder went 2-for-3 in the game and now has 21 doubles this season which ranks first in the conference and sixth all-time in ASU history.
DeLaGarza went 1-for-3 in the first game and then 2-for-4 in the second game to finish the regular-season leading the Rams and conference with a .382 batting average.
Derek Tyner also went 2-for-3 in the first game, while
Nehwon Norkeh,
Sam Kohler and
Cameron Massengill also had hits for the Rams. Brown struck out two in 1 1/3 innings of work and now has 15 career saves which ranks second in program history behind Joseph Key who had 16 saves from 2006-09.
ENMU was able to win the regular-season series over the Rams after taking the final game of the day after it had won three of four in March.
Bryce Zak (5-6) took the loss despite allowing only two earned runs and striking out four in four innings of work, while
Matt Shannon and
Kellen Rholl each had two strikeouts in relief. The Greyhounds led throughout, but pulled away by scoring four runs in the seventh inning.
Massengill and DeLaGarza each went 2-for-4 in the game with Massengill hitting a two-run double in the ninth inning for the game's final runs. Norkeh,
Brett David and
David Goggin also had hits in the game for the Rams. Clyde Kendrick (3-1) earned the win for ENMU after striking out 10 in six innings of work., while Blake Cooper and Daniel Ward each had two-RBI performances in the final game of the season for the Greyhounds who had a 16-7 hit advantage in the game.
