CANYON – The Angelo State softball team had West Texas A&M down to its final strike twice but was unable to secure the win falling in a 7-6 extra inning heartbreaker at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional in Canyon.
The Rambelles end the season at 33-17-1 while West Texas A&M improves to 45-10 on the season.
"What a disheartening loss today," ASU head softball coach
Travis Scott said. "We were one strike away from victory twice. This was a classic ASU-WT softball game."
With the score tied at one, the Rambelles took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth after WT's Kilee Halbert walked three batters and hit one to bring in two runs. Halbert, who had limited ASU to one run on three hits, was pulled for Tori Bayer after 5.1 innings of work.Â
The game had been a pitching duel through the first six innings of the game between Brandy Marlett and Halbert. Marlett struck out nine batters through six innings and limited the Lady Buffs to five hits. The Lady Buffs were down to their final three at-bats on the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Megan Granado threw out Allie Cranfill trying to steal third for the first out of the inning and Marlett got a grounder for a fielder's choice for the second. WT loaded the bases and Kaisha Dacosin was down to her final strike. She roped a double to right center to score two runs but the Rambelles were able to throw out the runner trying to score the game-winner at the plate to send the game to extra innings.
The two teams went scoreless in the eighth as
Kenedy Urbany came in relief of Marlett. Marlett threw seven innings and only allowed four runs on 10 hits. The freshman struck out 10 batters and only walked two. It is the fourth game of her career to strike out at least 10 batters and the third time against WT.
ASU was down to two outs and a runner on first in the top of the ninth.
Tina Cisneros stepped to the plate and blasted a home run to left center for a 6-4 advantage.
After WT's first two batters reached base, Urbany sat down the next straight with a fly ball to center and a strikeout. Dacosin again was down two strikes but hit a double to right field. Two Lady Buffs scored and an error allowed the game-winning run to come across.
Urbany was credited with the loss and finishes at 15-10 on the season. She only gave up one hit in 1.2 inning of work.
