No. 17 Belles Riding Five-Game Unbeaten Streak into Home Opener

SAN ANGELO - The No. 17 Angelo State women's soccer team is off to one of the best starts in program history and is looking to continue its momentum in the home opener against Dallas Baptist on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field.

The Belles completed their season-opening five-game road trip 4-0-1 after closing the trip with a 3-2 victory over St. Mary's. ASU has travelled roughly 3,600 miles over the past two weeks to begin the 2015 season and they look forward to playing at home where they went 9-0-1 last season.

"It's going to be nice, we're looking forward to it, to waking up on Thursday knowing that we're going to play a game on our home field," McCorkle said.

What has made the Belles tough to defend thus far is unpredictability. The Belles have had six different players score a goal this season and boast the Lone Star Conference's second leading goal-scorer in Haley Mendel. The junior has found the net three times this season and was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week.

Newcomer Demi Tsambasis didn't waste much time joining the scoring, as she has scored two goals on the season.  Sierra Anderson also racked up two assists in the win against St. Mary's on goals from Tsambasis and Loni Byers. Selena Alvarez, Tiffany Dang and Anderson have also scored a goal this season.  ASU is second in the LSC in goals scored with nine and six of those nine have come in the first half.

Anderson moved into fifth place on the ASU career list with 57 points. She is now three points away from tying Casey Halamicek for fourth place.

"It makes us less predictable and more difficult to defend," McCorkle said. "We want to have a lot of different players who can score goals and not be a team where they can just mark one player out of the game."

In their last contest, the Belles streak of 316 scoreless minutes was snapped as they allowed two goals to St. Mary's. As a team, ASU is second in the LSC, only having allowed three goals.

DBU was 14-5-1 in 2014 and made an NCAA DII Regional appearance, but fell short to St. Edward's 2-0.

McCorkle mentioned this game will require their best effort, as DBU has got off to a 2-1-1 start and was ranked ninth in the country as late as last week. The Patriots fell to Ft. Lewis and tied Colorado Mesa, two teams the Belles defeated earlier this season.

"[Ashley] Cox is a great player, [Emilie] McDonald is another player, they're always extremely organized, they want to play good soccer and knock the ball around," McCorkle said.

Both Cox and McDonald are senior forwards who have yet to score, but both have tallied one assist apiece. The Patriots leading scorer is Lindsey Washburn, who has scored two goals.

The Belles will host UTPB on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field.
