SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team will remain home this weekend for its final two matches of the season at the ASU Soccer Field, hosting Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 and West Texas A&M at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Oct. 16 for Senior Day.
The Belles (8-3-1, 4-2-0 LSC) have played strong defensively throughout the season at home, only allowing three goals all year on their home turf for a home goals against average of .500. The overall goals against average is not much higher at .514 and ranks 20th in the nation and No. 1 in the conference.
The back line made up of Lauren Perry, Ashley Exford, Callie Smith, Kylie Deel, Shay Williams and Kathleen Keoughan has shut out six opponents so far this season. The Belles have only allowed an average of 8.5 shots per game and an opponent's shooting percentage of .069.
Goalkeeper Sammy Cude has aided the defense as well, playing in all 12 Â games for the Belles and making 35 saves on the season. Cude has a save percentage of .854 which is good for No. 1 in the Lone Star Conference, and the freshman is 7-3-1 on the year.
"Defensively, we've done a pretty good job of minimizing goals against," ASU head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "We still want to eliminate some smaller errors and maybe make some tweaks through the second half of the season, and that'll hopefully help us increase our seeding."
Offensively, the Belles are led by Demi Tsambasis who has 10 goals on the season, which leads the LSC and is No. 14 in the nation. Four of the senior's goals have been game-winners, which is also first in the conference and seventh in the nation.
Freshman Trenadey Scott is second on the team in game-winners with two, after adding a goal to her total last weekend against Texas Woman's. She added one more shot in the game and the Belles finished with a 2-0 win against the Pioneers. The Everman, Texas native has three goals on the season and one assist, making her second on the team in total points for the season.
Defender Cynthia Andrews added a goal against Texas Woman's, scoring in the last ten minutes of the match after a corner kick from Shay Williams. The goal was the second of the season for Andrews, tying her with freshman Ally Warren.
Kathleen Keoughan got the assist on Scott's goal for her first point of the season. Tiffany Dang and Shay Williams are tied for the team lead in assists with three, while Morgan Sibson in close behind with two.
Also creating chances for the Belles has been Elizabeth Rodriguez, who is second on the team in shots (27) and shots on goal (11), and Morgan Sibson, who has had 22 shots and eight on goal.
"Attacking-wise, I think we can still be more precise," McCorkle said. "Even on Sunday, we outshot TWU 23-3. We got two goals, which is good, but I still think that percentage could be better and we could be scoring more."
ASU has defeated both WT and ENMU on the road already this season, topping the Lady Buffs 2-1 and the Greyhounds 3-0.
Eastern New Mexico comes into the matchup with a 3-7-1 record on the season and has a 2-4-0 showing in LSC play. The Lady Buffs have fared better so far in 2016, posting a 6-4-0 record and a 4-2-0 showing in conference. WT's only two LSC losses on the season have come from Texas A&M-Commerce and Angelo State.
Sunday's match against West Texas A&M will be senior day for the Belles, as they honor seven seniors before the last regular season home game of the year.
Demi Tsambasis, Ashley Exford, Haley Mendel, Kathleen Keoughan, Lauren Perry, Shay Williams and Cynthia Andrews make up this year's senior class, and the group has helped the ASU soccer team reach new heights.
The class was a part of Angelo State's first ever Lone Star Conference Championship in 2013 and also their second one in 2015. The seniors have also made the NCAA tournament the last two seasons and recorded ASU's first ever national tournament win in 2014.Â
"This group has been a part of something very special," McCorkle said. "They've definitely put a lot into the program and we want to finish with a couple of wins, not just for them, but for the team to get those two important conference wins."
