KINGSVILLE, Texas  –  The No. 10 Angelo State volleyball team extended its win streak to 12 matches as it swept Texas A&M - Kingsville (25-22, 25-21, 25-22) and Texas A&M International (25-10, 25-22, 25-9) on Tuesday afternoon.
With the pair of sweeps the Belles climbed to 25-2 overall, while moving to 15-1 in the Lone Star Conference. With the win over the Javelinas, the first place Belles took a commanding three match lead. This also marked ASU's 18th sweep of the 2016 season. Texas A&M – Kingsville fell to 20-8, 10-6 LSC, while Texas A&M International dropped to 2-19 overall with the losses.
"It was a good day for the Belles," commented ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "Kingsville is tough place to play, so to come away with a pair of sweeps shows how focused our girls were with the task at hand. I especially liked our focus in the second match, where we could have easily let our guard down. Eadara [Files] and Ali [Davison] played well today to help us earn the second win."
Leading the Belles offense for the day was Mallory Blauser and Morgan Seaton. Blauser racked up a team leading 28 total kills for the day. The senior turned in an outstanding .519 clip against the Dustdevils. Recording 13 digs against the Javelinas, she also penciled in her 11th double-double of the season. The Round Rock native also added a team second sic total blocks to her final numbers. Seaton followed with a team second 16 total kills as she fired in eight per match. She also led the team from the service lines with three service aces against TAMUI . Defensively, she led the team with a seven block performance against the Javelinas. She completed the day adding nine total blocks increasing her team leading total to 86.
 Brianna Sotello and Ali Davison also play large role in ASU's offensive success. Sotello recorded a team third eight kills and an ace against Texas A&M – Kingsville. On the defensive side of the ball she chalked her fifth consecutive match with double figure digs (12). Playing her eight match of the season, Davison recorded eight kills of her own and a stellar .353 clip against TAMUI.
Heading the Belles defensive efforts was Mallory Davidson. The Austin native tallied 29 total digs in the dual matches marking 10 consecutive matches with double-figure digs. This averaged 4.83 digs per set for the day.
Setting for the Belles were freshmen Meghan Parker and Eadara Files. Parker totaled a team high 36 assists against the dual opponents with 24 of those coming against Texas A&M – Kingsville. During this match she also assisted the defense with seven digs. Files recorded a career high 15 assists in the Belles' second match. She also aided the defense with a team third six digs also coming against the Dustdevils.
Kelly Hasbrouck and Brooke Robertson also made solid contributions to ASU's success in Kingsville. Against TAMUI, Hasbrouck checked in with a team third eight assist and two aces. Robertson contributed seven digs to the Belles' defense.
In the first set of the day, the Javelinas took an early 9-4 lead before Tulani Titley got the Belles back on track with a kill. ASU would steadily climb back and take the 15-14 lead for the first time with a block from Abbie Lynn and Seaton. The two squads would trade the lead another two times before a Blauser kill would place the Belles ahead 21-20. The senior would rocket in another three kills to complete the 5-2 run that would close out the set in favor of ASU.
Angelo State came out swinging in the second set as it took an early lead with a 6-2 run that saw big plays from Parker, Seaton and Blauser. Texas A&M – Kingsville would battle back to bring the score to an even 12, but Blauser kicked off a 6-1 run that would keep the Belles in front and push the score to 18-13. The Belles would not allow the hogs to bring the score even a second time. With a 20-19 lead, Sotello dropped in two straight kills and followed with a block accompanied by Titley to place the team one point away from a set two win. ATAMUK attempted rally would fall short as it would give the set to the Belles with a service error.
In the final set of the match, the Javelinas came out and scored the first two points dropping in a pair of service aces, but ASU quickly recovered and took over the lead with a Blauser kill. The Belles would advance its lead to 7-4 before the Javelinas would battle back tying the set at eight. The lead changed hands another eight times before, with the game tied at 22, a timely block from Seaton and Blauser gave the Belles the final push to close out the set and the match as it scored the final four points. Â
In the second match of the day, the Belles opened the first set with the throttle down as it took a large 12-4 lead. The opening run consisted of kills from Blauser, Seaton and Parker, as well as a block from Parker and Titley. The Dustdevils added another six points to the board giving them a total of 10. With the score sitting at 22-10 ASU then scored the final three points with Lynn adding the final kill off of a set.
The Dustdevils struck first in the second set as they quickly took a 6-3 lead over the Belles. Kills from Ali Davison, Blauser and Seaton, accompanied by a block from Seaton and Lynn placed ASU back in front, 7-6. TAMUI would rally to regain the lead at 12-10, before a Dustdevil service error jump started a 9-2 ASU run. Davidson and Leiyona Young contributed kills to the run, while Hasbrouck added a pair of aces. With 24-22 on the score board, Blauser fired in the final kill to take the team into the break with a 2-0 set lead.
Once again Texas A&M International would strike first. However, this would be followed with a massive 13-1 run from the Belles. Files contributed both of her aces to the run along with dropping in her first kill of the 2016 season. TAMUI added two more points before ASU hit the Dustdevils with another large 10-2 run that saw three Seaton aces. With a 24-9 ASU lead, Jenna Markey secured the second sweep of the day for the Belles as she rocketed in a kill for the final point of the match. Â Â Â
Angelo State returns to action on Friday, November 4 at 7 p.m. as it takes on Cameron in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center. It will then host Midwestern State on Saturday, November 5 at 2 p.m. as it celebrates its senior class on senior day.
