No.9 Ram Baseball Travels to LCU for Top 10 Match-up

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 9 Angelo State baseball team continues its month long road tour with a top 10 three game series match-up this weekend in Lubbock, Texas against the No.10 Lubbock Christian Chaps, with the first pitch being throw on Friday, February 19 at 4 p.m.

After kicking things off with the first game on Friday, the Rams will continue the series with games two and three taking place at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. ASU will enter the weekend long series with a 5-1 record. The Angelo State defense currently leads the LSC with a .990 fielding percentage and 147 put outs, while it pitching staff ranks second in the conference with a 2.76 ERA. The last time these two teams faced off the Rams swept the Chaps in a three game home series in San Angelo (1-7, 1-4, 1-4). ASU also holds a one game lead over LCU in the all-time series, 7-6. Lubbock Christian is currently boasting an undefeated 7-0 record.

Leading ASU at the plate is shortstop Paxton DeLaGarza and utility player Christian Abilla. DeLaGarza leads the team with 11 total hits, 11 total RBIs and a .840 slugging percentage. He once again played a major role in the Rams success this past weekend as it faced off with Southeastern Oklahoma State. The senior shortstop went 6-for-13 at the plate with a .461 batting average. He took over the lead spot with the most homers on the team cranking a two run homer during Friday's series opener, and a three run homer off the first his pitch during the last game of the series. The three run jack was part a seven run first inning that would prove to be the difference in the game.  In total, the Lubbock, TX native tallied seven RBIs against the Savage Storm and also added a double and a single to his stats for the weekend.

Abilla, who is sporting the squad's best batting average (.471), also had a big weekend against SOSU. The newcomer went 6-for-13 for the weekend stroking a double and plating four RBIs.  He has a team second eight hits and five total RBIs on the season. The Minnesota native has crossed the plate a team third five times.

Sam Kohler has also had a solid start to the season successfully recording a hit in all but one game. He currently boasts a stellar .400 batting average, a .450 slugging percentage and a .536 on base percentage. The senior out of Dripping Springs, Texas leads the team having scored 10 total runs this season and is second on the list with eight total hits in the six games played. Kohler has also shares the lead having drawn six walks. On the field, Kohler shares first place in the LSC fielding five double plays. 

Rounding out the ASU top performers at the plate, Steven Pinales, has recorded a home run and the teams only triple of the year. He is hitting .375 at the plate with six hits on the season and is third on the RBI list pushing four across the plate. The New Yorker has drawn a team leading six walks as well.

The Rams will get things started with pitcher Bryce Zak on the hill for game one. The senior has earned a team high two wins thus far and is sporting a 2.45 ERA. He leads the team  and is second in the LSC with 18 strikeouts in 11 total innings of work and has only given up three earned runs. Zak is second in t  During his last outing, he tossed five innings sitting down 10 and walking three.  

ASU could also look to Graylon Brown or Matt Shannon to make pitching appearances. Shannon is 1-1 on the season with a 3.75 ERA and a team second 16 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. Brown has recorded both a win and a save this season. He is third on the strikeout list with seven and currently hold a 0.00 ERA. The native of Brownwood, Texas is the only starting pitcher on the squad to not have given up a run.
