STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team split its four game series with Tarleton State today as the Texans edged the Rams, 5-4, in extra innings.
With the loss, ASU now holds a 20-14, 13-7 LSC record. Rams reliever, Graylon Brown (3-4), was credited with the loss, as the Texans out-hit Angelo State 14-8. The Texans improved to 14-18 overall and 8-12 in the Lone Star Conference with the win. TSU closer, Hunter Houston (2-1), earned the win. Â
The Texans struck first as they placed two on the board in the bottom of the first inning, off of a RBI single and an error by ASU. It would not be until the top of the sixth that the Rams would begin to rally as they took advantage of an error by the TSU third baseman that would allow Elias Aguirre to cross for ASU's first run of the game. Christian Abilla then hit a deep sac fly to center that plated Sam Kohler to tie the game at two.
With the game still tied in the top of the ninth Nathan Ruane stroked a two RBI single that would put the Rams up 4-2. However, ASU could not hold on to the lead in the bottom half of the inning and allowed TSU to push a pair across to take the game into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th inning by Angelo State, a Texan single to third plated the winning run for Tarleton State.
Starting pitcher, Joe Hauser, threw 1 2/3 innings for the Rams giving up two runs off of four hits and recording a pair of strikeouts. Kellen Rholl followed pitching through the fifth inning and also struck out a staff leading two hitters. He held the Texans scoreless and gave up only two hits in his 3 1/3 innings of work. Brown would take the mound for ASU in the sixth. The senior tossed a team most four innings and gave up three runs on six hits.
At the plate, Ruane, Klemm and Aguirre led the squad each recording two hits. Klemm recorded the team's only multi-base hit with a double in the top of the fourth. Jay Gonzales drew a team leading two walks on the day and Aguirre led the Rams on the bases with the team's only stolen base. Aguirre, Kohler, Paxton DeLaGarza and Clay Wegner all recorded a single run for ASU. Â
The Rams return to action on Friday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. to take on Eastern New Mexico for a three game series on Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium. Friday's Game will be followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9, with game one scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
