SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team won the season series with Midwestern State 3-1 with a 7-3 in game one before falling in the series finale 10-8 at Mayer Field on Sunday.
The Rameblles are now 25-16 on the season and 13-11 in the LSC while also improving to 13-5 at Mayer Field this season. Midwestern State moves to 23-21 overall and 8-12 in the LSC this season.
"Overall, it was a really good weekend with us," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "It was good to get three out of four wins from a good Midwestern State team. We swung the bat up and down the lineup all weekend and that is promising. We have struggled to get hits with runners on base but we were able to do that this weekend."
Kenedy Urbany started game one with a bang in the bottom of the first. The junior launched a ball to right center for a three-run home run for a 3-0 lead. It is the Helotes native sixth home run of the season.
Brandy Marlett came out with precisions holding Midwestern State hitless until the fourth inning and striking out five.
The Rambelles added a run in the third. Urbany led off the inning with a double down the left field line and scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Becky Wilhelm to increase the lead to 4-0.
MSU cut the lead in half with two solo home runs but ASU picked one of the runs in the fourth. Brooke Mangold reached on a strikeout wild pitch and used her speed to score on an error by the shortstop.
The runs back up in the fifth. Bailey Wallace singled up the middle and scored on a double from Alexis Evans. Evans would score two batters later on an errant throw form the MSU shortstop.
The Mustangs would score a run in the sixth but get no closer. Marlett throw a complete game and limited MSU to three runs on six hits. It is the sophomore's 10th victory of the season and she surpassed the 100 strikeout mark with eight more.
Game two started similar to the first game with ASU taking a lead in the first inning. Wallace started the day with a RBI single to score Madison Greenwell. With two outs, Lanie Robinson stepped to the plate with two outs. The senior stepped up and sent a pitch to right center to clear the bases. Taegan Kirk made it 5-0 with a RBI single to right field.
The Rambelles bats would go cold with only two hits in the next four innings.
MSU scored a run in the third on a dropped fly ball to make it 5-1. The Mustangs answered in a big way in the fifth. Five hits and two errors later, Midwestern State had taken a 10-5 lead.
ASU tried to respond in the sixth and had the bases loaded in the sixth but couldn't score a run. The Rambelles were down to their final three outs. Evans and Wilhlem hit back-to-back singles to bring Kelly Johnson to the plate. Johnson stroked a double to centerfield to score Evans. Robinson took the first pitch she saw to centerfield. The MSU lead was trimmed to 10-8 on a RBI fielder's choice by Taegan Kirk but MSU secured the win with the game striking out the game tying run.
Morgan Hill was credited with the loss allowing six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
"We are obviously disappointed in the way game four ended," Scott said. "Giving up a nine run inning is something we shouldn't be doing. We felt like we handed one away there. We battled and had a chance to tie it with one swing. We have to understand what we did wrong but we did a lot of good things this weekend."
The Rambelles will hit the road to face Texas A&M-International on Wednesday, April 6 for a doubleheader in Laredo. Â
