SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team got its second road win in as many days, defeating West Texas A&M 1-0 in the final minutes on Sunday afternoon.
The Belles (9-2-1, 6-1-1 LSC) earned their second straight shutout in the match and limited the Lady Buffs to just six shots on goal overall.
Avery McNeme started the scoring opportunity that finally broke the tie in the final minutes, beating her defender and shooting a ball that was stopped by WT goalkeeper Courtney Dippel. The rebound, however, came right to ASU forward Trenadey Scott, who tried to lift the ball over Dippel and into the goal.
Scott's shot hit the crossbar, but bounced back out to where Broderick was waiting, and the California native sent it right back into the net to give ASU the lead and eventually the win.
The goal was Broderick's third of the season and her first game-winner in her Angelo State career. Scott was credited with an assist on the goal, marking her third of the season.
ASU was still in the game in the 88th minute thanks to its second straight strong defensive performance. For the first time all season, the Belles recorded a second straight shutout, limiting the Lady Buffs to just 13 shots all day.
Goalkeeper Sammy Cude led the way making five saves on the day for her third shutout of the year.
The sophomore was helped out by the back line made up of Callie Smith, Marissa Brezgiel, Molly Warren, Meagan Denn, Kylie Deel, and Kyah Carlsen. ASU has now held opponents scoreless for 212 straight minutes going back to the matchup with Texas Woman's on October 8.
"We've really struggled to get shutouts this season," Angelo State Head Soccer Coach Travis McCorkle said, "and I thought with the long road trip and the rain delay Friday, that we would give up some goals this weekend. The girls played tough though, and I was really impressed."
Angelo State did not have many scoring chances outside of Broderick's goal, with the majority being created by Trenadey Scott and Avery McNeme. Scott had four shots on the day including two on goal, while McNeme followed close behind with three shots and two on goal.
Three other ASU players took shots in the game, including Callie Smith, Cassandra Moosburger and Tiffany Dang, who put her lone shot on goal.
"It was a rough, defensive game, but at halftime we talked about that and said that if we could all work together, the load would be a lot easier to carry," McCorkle said. "They did that better in the second half, and I think this weekend was a good step forward for our team."
Angelo State will be back at home for its next week of play, taking on Texas Permian Basin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday before facing Midwestern State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
