SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team will be on the road this weekend, facing Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m. on Friday in Commerce and taking on Texas Woman's at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Denton.
The Belles (6-1-1, 3-0-1) are led by the top two goal-scorers in the Lone Star Conference in sophomore Trenadey Scott and junior Cassandra Moosburger who have scored a combined 15 times this season.Â
Scott is the No. 1 goal-scorer in the LSC and No. 3 in the nation with 1.25 goals per game. She has two assists this year as well, giving her an average of 2.75 points per game which ranks No. 3 nationally as well. The Fort Worth native also ranks No. 16 nationally with three game-winning goals.
In second place in the LSC in total goals is Moosburger with five. A junior college transfer, Moosburger is averaging .625 goals per game and has a pair of assists on the year as well.
Elizabeth Rodriguez also has three goals on the season, ranking eighth in the conference, and the senior recorded her second assist of the year in the Belles' most recent matchup with Eastern New Mexico.
Four other ASU players have scored this year, including Tiffany Dang, Â Analise Watson, Mackenzie Broderick and Avery McNeme. Both McNeme and Broderick recorded the first goals of their ASU careers this past weekend, as McNeme converted a penalty kick against WT and Broderick scored in the second half against Eastern New Mexico.
The freshman McNeme also leads the team in assists this season with three, giving her five total points. Megan Allen has two assists as well, and Loni Byers has one.
Overall, Angelo State has the No. 23 offense in the nation with 2.75 goals per game, which also ranks first in the LSC. The Belles are the only team in the conference to average more than two goals a game.
Defensively, the Belles have given up just 1.25 goals per game on the season. The back line made up of Callie Smith, Marissa Brezgiel, Kyah Carlsen, Meagan Denn, Kylie Deel, Janessa Dunbar, Molly Warren, and Jaclyn Wittke had its best game of the season against Eastern New Mexico.
The Belles earned their second shutout of the year in game, allowing no shots in the first half and giving up a season-low three shots on goal overall. ASU also played strong defense deep in its own territory, giving up only one corner kick to the Greyhounds.
Sammy Cude continued to start and play in goal for Angelo State, bringing her season save total to 42 and earning her second shutout against ENMU.
Texas A&M-Commerce comes into the matchup with a 6-2-2 record overall, including a 2-2 showing in LSC play. They have stifled opposing offenses so far this season, allowing an average of .847 goals per game, which is first in the conference. Lion goalkeeper Caitlin Duty has also has the second best save percentage in the conference at .847.
ASU and TAMC have a history of close games, as the last 11 matchups between the two LSC foes have been decided by just one goal, and seven of those 11 games were scores of 1-0.
Texas Woman's is currently on a three-game skid, but will take on Midwestern State Friday night prior to facing the Belles. Chelsea Martin leads the team with four goals, and Haley Ward is close behind with three on the season.
