Belles Hold Off Texas Woman's for 74-62 Road Win

DENTON, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team held off Texas Woman's 65-58 to improve to 2-0 in the Lone Star Conference on Thursday night in Denton.

The Belles (4-1, 2-0 LSC), who had traveled 1,001 miles over the last three days, limited the Pioneers (3-3, 0-1 LSC) to just 33.3-percent from the field with the help from 11 blocks and 10 steals.  ASU excelled at the free throw line hitting 23-of-32 including 12-of-14 in the last two minutes and scored 24 points off 18 TWU turnovers.

"This was a typical LSC road game," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Renae Shippy said. "Our girls were resilient and didn't let tough times falter their confidence down the stretch. We had big performances by multiple players. I was extremely proud of Madi Greenwood with her leadership and poise at the end of the fourth quarter."

Five Belles scored in double figures led by Madi Greenwood's career high 19 points. The senior hit three 3-pointers and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line while also grabbing seven rebounds. Dezirae Hampton scored a season high 15 points with nine rebounds. De'Anira Moore recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds and almost accomplished a triple-double with a career high eight blocks. It is the third most blocks in a single game in ASU history. Keanna Kelly chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds followed by Marquita Daniels 12 points.

A 12 point ASU lead at the 5:26 mark in the fourth quarter had dwindled to just three after an 11-2 TWU run with just over two minutes left in the game. Hampton got open and drained a 3-pointer to slow down the Pioneers. The Belles would hit 12 of 14 free throws over the last 1:25 to secure the 74-62 win.

The Belles started out strong jumping out to a 6-0 lead aided by a Kelly 3-pointer. The Pioneers answered with a 6-0 run of their own. The two teams would trade baskets the rest of the quarter to a 10-10 tie.

The 3-pointer was big in the second quarter as Kelly and Greenwood hit back-to-back 3-pointers during a 9-0 run to make it 22-13. TWU cut the deficit to five before Greenwood drained her second 3-pointer of the quarter. The lead was pushed to 10 twice until ASU carried a 29-21 lead in at the break.

The Belles came out and extended their lead to 13 at 36-23 as Moore opened the second half with seven points including five at the free throw line. The Pioneers once again continued to battle throughout the game and scored nine straight points to trim the deficit to 36-32 with 5:00 to go in the third quarter. Kelly hit a jumper and Daniels followed it up with four straight points to make the advantage double digits at 42-32 before going into the fourth up 42-35.

TWU scored four points to open the fourth quarter to make it 43-39 but 3-pointers by Hampton and Greenwood pushed the lead to 11 at 50-39 with 7:45 to play. ASU would keep the score in double figures until the Pioneers run at the 5:26 mark.

The Belles will return to Stephens Arena at the Junell Center for Military Appreciation Day on Thurday, Dec. 7 at 5:30 versus Midwestern State.
