Rams Complete Sweep of UTPB on Sunday

ODESSA - The Angelo State baseball team finished off one win to start the afternoon on Sunday and completed the sweep with a second win over Texas Permian Basin on Sunday afternoon in Odessa.

"I was really proud of the way the guys continued to battle throughout the weekend," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "Especially in the game we had to finish today, they got down, but were able to come back and get the win, and they've done that pretty well all season."

The Rams (16-2) had to complete game two of Saturday's doubleheader to start the afternoon, finishing the sixth and seventh innings of the game after it was delayed yesterday due to lightening. The matchup picked up right where it left off, with the Rams batting with two outs in the sixth and up 2-1.

UTPB quickly took the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs to go up 4-2. Angelo State responded, however, with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh to go back out in front. Reliever Joe Hauser came in to close out the game in the bottom of the seventh and shut the door for his second win of the season.

Angelo State and Texas Permian Basin took a thirty minute break following the completion of the delayed game before playing the series finale. The Rams kept the offense going in their fourth game in Odessa, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning.

Jonathan Soberanes and Elias Aguirre got the game started with back-to-back singles before Steven Pinales brought in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Matt Waller singled next, before Mitch Henshaw, Jay Gonzales and Michael Urquidi all reached on walks and Nick Novak singled to bring around the top of the order again. Soberanes singled for the second time in the inning before the top half of the first finally wrapped up.

The Rams got another run in the second and three more in the third to push the lead out to 11 runs. In the third, Urquidi led off with a single and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Aguirre then worked a two-out walk to bring up Steven Pinales, who hit a bases-clearing triple, his fourth of the season.

UTPB finally got on the board in the fourth inning with six runs of their own to cut the deficit to just five, before Jake Mathys came in to stop the bleeding. Mathys would end up earning the win in relief. The score would remain there through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings until the Rams came back up to bat in the eighth.

ASU exploded again at the plate, scoring another seven runs in the inning to push the lead back out to 11 runs. UTPB recorded two quick outs in the inning before Waller got on base with a single. The next five ASU batters reached, capped off by a triple from Novak that cleared the bases.

UTPB got one run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the gap to seven, but it would not be enough as the game ended after eight innings on a run rule.

The Rams will be back at home for their next series, taking on West Texas A&M March 17-19 in a four-game series.
