LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 8 Angelo State softball set a new school record with its 21st and 22nd consecutive wins of the season in a doubleheader sweep of No. 20 Lubbock Christian in Lubbock on Monday afternoon.
The Rambelles are 26-1 on the season after the 7-0 win and 6-2 victory. Lubbock Christian (17-10) was held to 11 hits and only 2 runs. ASU combined for 17 hits and 13 runs in the sweep.
The Rambelles went out with a chance to set the school record for wins in the first game against Lubbock Christian and wasted little time getting on the board. Bailey Wallace hit her second home run of the season in the top of the first for ASU's first run of the game.
"It has been a long weekend for us being on the road this whole time," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "I was proud of the way they continued to play with poise and confidence and get two wins against a good LCU team."
It would be the only run Brandy Marlett would need. The junior was dialed in holding LCU to just five hits and striking out six in five innings of work.
ASU continued to add to its lead in the second inning. Brooke Mangold hit a RBI single through the right side to score Danae Bina and a two-RBI double by Courtney Barnhill made it 4-0 after two innings. It is Barnhill's eighth double of the year.
Mangold highlighted the fourth inning with a solo home run to center field. Karina Rocha drew a bases load walk to score Wallace for a 6-0 advantage.
Wallace, who went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, singled up the middle to bring home Madison Greenwell for a 7-0 lead.
Morgan Hill came in to finish the game over the final two innings. The junior did not allow a hit and struck out one. Marlett improved to 12-1 on the year with the win.
Bina got the scoring started for ASU in the second game with her first home run at ASU. Alexis Evans would score on a throwing error it 2-0 after two.
Kenedy Urbany would hold LCU scoreless through the first three innings of the game.
The Rambelles exploded for four runs in the fourth. Barnhill his a RBI single up the middle and Taegan Kirk followed it up with a three-run blast to centerfield to make it 6-0. It is the sophomore's fifth home run of the season.
LCU got back two runs in the fourth but Urbany got out of the fourth with a strikeout and ground out. Morgan Hill would come in for the final three innings and limit LCU to just one hit and striking out four in relief. Three of her four strikeouts came to close out the game in the seventh inning to secure the ASU win.Â
The Rambelles will return home on Thursday to face Oklahoma Christian in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. before hosting No. 11 West Texas A&M on Friday and Saturday.Â
