SAN ANGELO – The No. 17 Angelo State softball team swept a midweek doubleheader 10-0 in five innings and 7-1 from No. 22 Lubbock Christian on Thursday at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles improved to 19-1 overall and limited the Lady Chaps (16-4) to one run on four hits in the two games combined. ASU scored 17 runs on 14 hits with two doubles and three home runs.
"I'm extremely excited with how we played today," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We came out and played flawless. To be able to come out and beat a good Lubbock Christian team is huge and it's a big statement. It was fun to watch great defense and we put a show on today."
Taegan Kirk was perfect on the day going a combined 5-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI. She hit two doubles adn one home run. Courtney Barnhill went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI. She hit two home runs and drew two walks.Â
Angelo State jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first with four runs. With runners at first and second, Kenedy Urbany put down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch scored Madison Greenwell and a safety squeeze bunt by Barnhill made it 2-0. Kirk turned on a 2-2 pitch and sent a laser over the left field fence for a two-run home run. It is the sophomore's fourth home run of the season.
Brandy Marlett sat down LCU in order for the second straight inning and ASU once again put up four runs in the second. Bailey Wallace kept the small ball streak going with a sacrifice bunt brought home Brooke Mangold. Urbany hit a RBI fielder's choice  and Barnhill followed it up by crushing her sixth home run of the season to right center for an 8-0 advantage.
Two more runs came across in the third for ASU. Kirk added two more RBI to get total with a single through the left side. The Lubbock native finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with one run scored and four RBI.
Marlett had a perfect game going into fourth but LCU singled to break up in the fourth. It would be the only hit the junior would give up in four innings. Morgan Hill came in to pitch the fifth and sat down the Lady Chaps in order for the run-rule victory. Marlett improved to 8-1 striking out seven batters.
"Brandy was throwing hard today," Scott said. "She had good command of her pitches and they never made an adjustment."
It was another quick start for the ASU offense with a run in the bottom of the first to start game two. Kirk continued to be locked in at the plate and sent a ball down the left field line for a RBI double.
Urbany would strikeout the side in the first and not allow a hit through the first three innings.
ASU added an unearned run in the third. Urbany sent a ball that was caught by the center fielder and Wallace went to third after tagging. When Wallace reached third, the third baseman missed the throw and allowed the sophomore to score on an error to go up 2-0.
Urbany allowed a single in the fourth but forced a pair of ground balls to get out of the inning. A RBI single by Brooks Mangold made it 3-0 after four.
"Kenedy was perfect today," Scott said. "She was really hitting her spots and staying down in the zone."
The Rambelles opened it up in the fifth. With a runner on second, Barnhill sent a ball to the right field stands for a two-run home run. Alexis Evans increased the lead to 7-0 with a two-RBI single through the right side.
