No. 1 Rambelles Defeat Texas A&M-Commerce 7-2

SAN ANGELO – The No. 1 Angelo State softball team had to endure a two-hour delay but once the game started ASU defeated Texas A&M-Commerce 7-2 in its LSC series opener on Friday night at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles (47-4, 22-3 LSC) scored seven runs on eight hits. It is the ninth time in the last 10 games to record at least eight hits. The Lions (30-16, 14-11 LSC) were held to two runs on four hits.

"I was proud of the way our team dealt with the delay," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "They didn't panic and once we got the lights on I thought we were sharp. Brandy Marlett set the tone early and we were able to get a couple of runs early. We did a good job of moving runners and taking advantage of situations."

The scoring started early for ASU with two runs in the top of the first. Courtney Barnhill recorded a RBI infield single to score Bailey Wallace for the first run of the game. TAMUC's Katie Dean would allow the next run on an illegal pitch to make it 2-0.

Brandy Marlett, who struck out the first two batters of the game, gave up a solo home run in the top of the second to cut the ASU lead to 2-1. The junior rebounded by striking out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Rambelles got the run back in the bottom of the second. Danae Bina led off the inning with a perfect bunt single and scored on a RBI bunt from Brooke Mangold.

The run support continued in the fourth as Madison Greenwell singled to center field on the first pitch she saw.  Bina and pinch runner Heather Reatherford both came around to score to increase the lead to 5-1.

Kenedy Urbany capped off the night in a big way. The junior turned on a pitch and sent a laser over the left field wall for a two-run home run. It is her 11th home run of the season and the 41st of her career. She is now one away from tying the ASU career record of 42 held by Kacie Easley.

Marlett settled in and only allowed one run on three hits over the final five innings.  The Henderson, Nevada, native struck out 12 and only walked one in her 15 complete game of the season. She is now 24-3 on the year.

The Rambelles will honor their four seniors Katlyn Herzog, Kelly Johnson, Alexis Evans and Urbany prior to first pitch tomorrow at 1 p.m.
