SALEM, Virginia – The No. 1 Angelo State softball team defeated Humboldt State 5-1 in the first game of the NCAA Division II Softball College World Series and will play the winner of West Virginia Wesleyan and Molloy at 11 a.m. EST / 10 a.m. CST on Friday.
The Rambelles (58-5) used a three run fourth inning that was highlighted by two home runs to start the scoring. The Jacks (43-14) were held to five hits. ASU moves to 5-0 in opening round games of the NCAA Division II College World Series and 11-7 overall.
It took Angelo State a few innings to figure out Humboldt State's Madison Williams. The first hit of the game didn't come until the fourth inning, but it was a big one. Kenedy Urbany led off the fourth and crushed a ball over the left field fence to make it 1-0. It is the senior's 15th home run of the season.
The inning continued as Danae Bina stepped to the plate with Taegan Kirk on second and two outs. The junior sent a ball down the left field line that cleared the fence for her second home run of the season and extended the Rambelles' lead to 3-0.
Bailey Wallace added an insurance run in the fifth. Brooke Mangold singled up the middle to lead off the inning. After an error on a sacrifice bunt, Wallace sent a ball to the left center fence that turned into a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Brandy Marlett scattered two hits over the first five innings. HSU was able to score in the top of the sixth on a solo home run but it would be the only run Marlett would allow. She struck out four and only allowed four hits in six innings of work.
ASU got the run back in the sixth after Kirk hit an infield single to start the inning. Pinch runner Kelly Johnson was able to get to third on back-to-back singles and score on a throwing error from the HSU second baseman.
Urbany came into the seventh to secure the win with a pair of ground balls and a strike out. Marlett improves to 29-4 on the season with the win.
