Rambelles Finish Season as NCAA Division II National Runner-Up after Falling 5-1 to Minnesota State

SALEM, Virginia – The Angelo State softball team finished the season as the NCAA Division II national runner-up falling to Minnesota State 5-1 in game two of the NCAA Division II National Championship Series on Monday afternoon at the Moyer Complex in Salem, Virginia.

The Rambelles conclude the season at 60-7, which is the most wins in ASU history and tied for the most in Lone Star Conference history. ASU won the program's fifth NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship and seventh LSC title.

Angelo State, who needed a win in the best of three series after losing game one on Sunday morning 5-1, started the game by putting runners on in the second and third but was unable to capitalize. The Mavericks struck first scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the third. Two more unearned runs came across in the fourth to make it 3-0 after four.

Kenedy Urbany, playing her final game as a Rambelle, was able get the crowd going in the top of the sixth. The senior crushed a ball down the right field line that went over the fence for a solo home run. It is the ASU career leader's 16th of the season and the 46th overall during her time with the Rambelles.

Minnesota State added two more runs in the sixth to make it 5-1.

ASU was limited offensively by the national tournament's most outstanding player Coley Ries. She held the Rambelles to three hits and struck out 14 to secure the victory.

Reis finished the year at 41-3 in the circle while Urbany was credited with the loss to finish 21-2. Urbany finished with three strikeouts and set the ASU single season record for lowest ERA at 1.16.

Minnesota State finished the season at 63-7 and won the program's first national title.

It was the final game for ASU senior's Urbany, Kelly Johnson, Katlyn Herzog and Alexis Evans. Urbany, Danae Bina and Courtney Barnhill were named to the all-tournament play for their outstanding play throughout the tournament.
