Belles Take on SWOSU in Home Opener

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team will play its first home game of the 2017 season at noon Sunday against Southwestern Oklahoma State at the ASU Soccer Field. Entrance to the game will be free for all children 14 and under who wear their club soccer jersey when accompanied by an adult.

The Belles enter the matchup with a 2-1-0 record on the season after defeating New Mexico Highlands last Sunday, 3-2.

"It'll be nice for the girls to have a full week here with just the one game on Sunday," Angelo State Head Soccer Coach Travis McCorkle said. "We'll have a good week of preparation and then on Sunday their friends and family and the rest of our fans can come out and sit in our new shaded stands and we can put together a good result."

ASU currently has the best offense in the Lone Star Conference with an average of two goals per game and has scored the most goals overall with six, despite playing less games than any other LSC team.

Sophomore Trenadey Scott leads the offensive attack with three goals on the season, including one game winner. The Fort Forth native has played the third most minutes of any field player this season at 234 and has 12 shots including six on goal this season.

The Belles have spread around the offense outside of Scott's performance, however, with three other players scoring one goal apiece. Two of those players got their first goals of the season last Sunday against New Mexico Highlands in Cassandra Moosburger and Analise Watson.

Moosburger is new to the Belles this season after playing at Otero Junior College last season and got her first score with ASU to tie the game against New Mexico Highlands. She has played in all three games and has five total shots.

Watson followed up Moosburger with the game-winning goal against the Cowgirls last week, scoring in the 74th minute. It was the midfielder's second game-winner in her career.

The only other Belle to record a goal this season is midfielder Elizabeth Rodriguez, and she is also the only ASU player with an assist. Rodriguez has the second most points on the team with three.

Avery McNeme and Meagan Allen also have shots on goal this season.

Senior defender Callie Smith has anchored the back line for the Belles so far this season, playing more minutes than any other field player.

Smith has been helped by fellow defenders Janessa Dunbar, Marissa Brezgiel, Kyah Carlsen, Meagan Denn, Kylie Deel and Molly Warren on the back line as well as midfielders Tiffany Dang, Loni Byers, Adison McNeme and Jacquelyn Ramirez. Overall, ASU defense has allowed an average of just one goal per game and the team has an opponent's shot percentage of .067.

Also assisting the Belle defense has been goalkeeper Sammy Cude, who has played every minute of every game so far this year and allowed just three goals in those 270 minutes. The California native has 24 saves already this season with one shutout and a 2-1 record. She set a new career high for saves in a game last week, stopping 11 shots in the win. Cude is No. 14 in the nation in saves per game this year.

Southwestern Oklahoma State enters the weekend with a 2-1 record like the Belles, losing only to No. 5 Central Missouri in the season opener. The Bulldogs will take on West Texas A&M Friday night prior to facing ASU.
