Belles earn road win over Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE – The Angelo State women's basketball team earned a win inside Wisdom Gym for the first time since 2006, topping Tarleton State 75-64 Saturday afternoon.

The Belles (4-0, 2-0 LSC) were led by Maquita Daniels, who had 18 points and seven rebounds in the game to go along with five steals on defense.

Tarleton State jumped out in front to start the game, opening up a 7-2 lead three minutes into the game. McKinley Bostad kept the TexAnns on top with a three-pointer halfway through the game's opening quarter, but the Belles responded with a three-pointer from an Asia Davis and a fastbreak layup from Dezrae Hampton to cut the deficit to just one heading into the media timeout.

ASU got the first bucket out of the timeout, with Catara Samuel hitting a layup in the paint to give the Belles the lead with 3:52 left in the first quarter. Angelo State scored more than half of their points  in the paint in the matchup, outscoring TSU 48-36. De'Anira Moore was a big part of ASU's inside presence, scoring a season-high and team-leading 19 points against TSU. Samuel's layup sparked a 10-2 run to end the quarter, with the Belles up 21-14 10 minutes in.

The TexAnns would not go away quietly, however, even after the Belles got the lead as big as eight early in the second quarter. TSU fought its way back in, re-taking the lead with 4:27 left to play in the half. ASU responded with another short 7-0 run, however, leading by six as the two teams went into the locker rooms.

Tarleton State tied the game up one final time in the third quarter at 47-47, but ASU responded again, starting an 8-0 run with a three-pointer from Maria Delgado to put them up 54-49 going into the final period.

A 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter gave Angelo State some breathing room as their lead got to its widest point at 14 with 3:12 left to play on a three-pointer from Asia Davis, who hit both of her attempts from behind the arc in the game and had eight points.

The TexAnns fought back to get the gap to just nine points, but it was too little, too late and Moore hit a pair of free throws late for the 11-point win 12 years in the making.

The Belles will return home next for their first games of the season in the friendly confines of the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center, as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday before facing St. Mary's at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
