SAN ANGELO – Playing their last game of the 2018 calendar year, the No. 21 Angelo State women's basketball team defeated Montana State-Billings 89-66 on Wednesday.
The Belles (8-1) outscored the Yellowjackets 38-24 in the paint and hit a season-high 13 three-pointers as a team in the win.
Dezirae Hampton and Mikayla Blount led the attack from behind the arc, each hitting four three-pointers and finishing in double figures. For Hampton, it was the sixth straight game she has reached the double-digit mark, and the eight this season. She has only failed to reach double figures one time. Blount got into double figures for the first time all season, however, scoring a season-high 12 points off the bench.
Two other Angelo State players also finished in double figures against MSU-Billings, in team-leading scorer and rebounder De'Anira Moore, who had 24 points and eight boards, and Marquita Daniels, who had a great all-around game with 15 points, five assists and six rebounds.
The game was tight throughout the first quarter of play as the lead changed several times and neither team got ahead by more than six, but in the second quarter the Belles turned up the pressure.
ASU ended the second period with eight straight points, including a three-pointer with 2 seconds left to put them up by double digits for the first time, and went into the locker room up 11.
In the third quarter, the Belles took hold of the momentum for good, using another 10 point run to push the lead past 20 points for the first time all game.
The widest gap of the game came in the fourth quarter, when a three-pointer by Essence Johnson put the Belles up by 26, and the two teams traded buckets for the final four minutes as ASU cruised to the 23-point win.
Angelo State will now be on break for the holidays, returning to action after the start of the new year. They will take on Texas Woman's at 5:30 p.m. on January 3 in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
