No. 2 Rambelles Win Finale of ASU George & Ola McCorkle Challenge

SAN ANGELO – The No. 2 Angelo State softball team capped off the ASU George & Ola McCorkle Challenge with a 6-4 victory over Texas A&M International on Sunday afternoon.

The Rambelles improved to 10-1 but had to work for it. The Dustdevils (2-10) out hit ASU 9-6 and stranded nine runners in the loss. Angelo State has now won nine straight games.

"I am proud of the coaches, players, umpires and fans for being flexible wiht this weekend's tournament," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Everyone was great as we chased the weather all weekend. I thought we did a great job on the field and were able to get six wins. Karina Rocha and Morgan Hill each had big weekends. We have to shift our focus now towards Lone Star Conference play and I feel we are ready for the challenge."

ASU got on the board first with five runs in the second inning. Brooke Mangold had the bases loaded and just one out. The senior was hit by a pitch to allow the first run of the game to score. The bases remained loaded with two outs as Bailey Wallace roped a double just inside the left field line to clear the bases. Courtney Barnhill added the fifth run with a bloop RBI single to left field for a 5-0 advantage.

Morgan Hill received the start and held TAMIU scoreless until the third. A pair of errors in the third allowed two runs to score in the top of the third.

Wallace hit her second double of the game in the fourth inning to advance Madison Greenwell to third. Barnhill hit a RBI grounder to allowed Greenwell to score the sixth run of the game.

Meagan Hill came in the fourth and only allowed a hit while striking out two in the inning. She started the fifth with a strikeout but allowed two runs. Brandy Marlett came in relief with one out got a popup and a bases loaded strikeout to end the inning.

The senior would earn her first save of the season only allowing three hits and striking out two in 2.2 innings of work. Hill won her sixth game of the season pitching 4.0 innings and striking out six.

The Rambelles will turn their sites to Lone Star Conference play starting with a three game road series at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17.
