No. 2 Rambelles Sweep Texas A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State softball team started Lone Star Conference 3-0 with a sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville after a 5-1 and 6-0 wins in Kingsville on Saturday.

The Rambelles (13-1, 3-0 LSC) have now won 12 straight games and held the Javelinas (3-7, 0-3 LSC) to just one run during the doubleheader. ASU scored 11 runs on 16 hits over the 14 innings of the double header.

"It was a huge weekend to be able to go on the road and get three Lone Star Conference wins," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Brandy Marlett looked very good in game one. She looked like the Brandy of old and Morgan Hill continues to dominate people. We had some big home runs and did a lot of the little things really well considering we had two starters out of the lineup. We were able to get production out of everybody which is encouraging."

The first game was scoreless through the first three innings. The Rambelles were able to get on the board first. Bailey Wallace led the fourth off with her second single of the day. Karina Rocha made it an easy walk home with a two run home run to right field. It is the sophomore's sixth home run of the season.  Taegan Kirk recorded the third consecutive hit and after an error, Mylonee Becerra hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 after the top of the fourth.

Brandy Marlett held TAMUK hitless through the first three innings. The Javelinas were able to score one off the senior in the bottom of the fourth but it would be the only run she would allow. The senior only gave up four hits and one run while striking out six in a complete game to move to 4-0.

Kirk came up in the sixth with a runner on and sent a ball over the right field fence to make the final score 5-0. It is the senior's second homer of the season.

The Rambelles completed the sweep with a combined shutout from Morgan Hill and Maykayla Corbin. Hill threw 6.1 innings and only allowed three hits for her eighth win of the season. She struck out six and walked one for her eighth victory of the season. Corbin came in for the final two outs and got a grounder and strikeout.

Brooke Mangold got the first runs on the board in the second inning with a two-run RBI double to left field. It got by the left fielder who tried to make a diving catch.

Two more runs came across in the third. Kirk sent a ball to right center to plate Wallace and a RBI fielder's choice from Danae Bina made it 4-0.

The scoring was capped off by a pair of solo home runs. Rocha sent a ball over the left field fence for her seventh of the season while Wallace his her first of the season in the top of the seventh.

The Rambelles return home to host Western New Mexico in a four-game series starting on Friday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m.
