SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team will wrap-up its 2017-18 regular season schedule with home bouts against Eastern and Western New Mexico this week as it also celebrates its senior class.
The Rams, now 17-9 overall and 8-8 in the Lone Star Conference, will look to improve both its regional and conference standings with this week's duo of games. Angelo State enters the week sitting on top of the proverbial regional ranking bubble at No. 8, as the final top eight ranked teams in the NCAA South Central Region will advance to the regional tournament. In the Conference, ASU is currently a solid No. 5 in the standings.
Angelo State will get things started on Thursday, February 22 as they look to even the series with Eastern New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. The Greyhounds will travel to the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center with a record of 10-15, 5-11 LSC. ENMU, which is also riding a three game losing streak, edged the Rams earlier this season, 92-89.
ASU will then honors its 2017-18 senior class as it plays host to a 5-20, 2-14 LSC, Western New Mexico team on Saturday, February 24 at 4 p.m. The last place Mustangs will first travel to Kingsville to face Texas A&M – Kingsville on Thursday as it seeks to build upon its last win, which came over Midwestern State. Earlier this season ASU dominated WNMU by a score of 92-73, a game in which the Rams set a school record for 3-pointers with 17.
With an offense that it producing 83.3 points per game, ASU has outscored its opponents by a point margin of 6.9 points thus far. Currently, this is the third highest point per game average and fourth best scoring margin in the conference. Angelo State has been extremely proficient from inside the arch knocking down a LSC second .477 of its shots.
Defensively, the Rams have averaged 7.31 steals and 3.58 blocked shots per game. This has allowed the squad to move to second in the conference with 16.1 turnovers forced per contest. The team has also edged its opponents in the rebound category with 38.1 boards to the oppositions 37.9.
Brandon Williams, DeVaughn Jenkins, Ran Tut and William Tchiengang are the four seniors that will be honored prior to Saturday's tip-off with WNMU. Along with playing major roles on the court for the Rams, the foursome has also provided veteran leadership to the team. Williams, a team captain, is hitting a team best .632 from short-range as he is averaging a team second 11.1 points per game. The big man also leads the defensive efforts with 38 total blocks thus far. He has recently broken into the top 5 in program history with 65 during his ASU career. Averaging 6.3 boards per game, Williams leads the team in the category with 163.
Jenkins is the second senior that has made his presence known in the Stephens Arena for the past two seasons. He has played a major role off the bench for the Rams as he is knocking down .471 of his inside shots and .538 of his freethrows. The Florida native had also contributed 43 total boards, six total steals and a team fourth seven total blocks to the season.
Completing the group, Tut and Tchiengang came to ASU from division one programs to complete their final year of eligibility. Hailing originally from the country of Sudan, by way of Melbourne, Australia, Tut has accrued a squad fourth 3.2 boards per game. He has also been a prolific scorer with 5.2 points per game off the bench. Coming to San Angelo from the Country of Cameroon, Tchiengang has also played an important part of the Rams supporting cast. He has pulled down 42 total rebounds and sunk 53 points on the season. In addition, he has aided the defense pocketing six steals.      Â
