LUBBOCK, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team defeated Black Hill State 87-75 to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament for the third straight year and will face tournament host Lubbock Christian on Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Lubbock.
The Belles (23-6) shot extremely well hitting 50.9 percent from the field and turned 22 turnovers into 22 points. The Yellow Jackets (24-8) were held to 43.1 percent shooting and made 13 3-pointers. Angelo State scored 36 points in the paint compared to 22 for BHSU and finished with 14 assists and 11 steals.
Angelo State advances on to face Lubbock Christian for the second time in the last three years in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening at the Rip Griffin Center. LCU won the matchup in 2016 by a score of 101-72.
"We are blessed and really excited to have advanced to the round of 32," Angelo State head coach Renae Shippy said after the game. "Kynese Davis and De'Anira Moore had really big games for us. Kynese brought energy off the bench and Moore to get a double-double while losing the rebounding margin is huge. Black Hill State didn't quit and give them credit. I was proud of our girls for being able to finish the game tonight."
Four players scored in double figures led by Marquita Daniels' 21 points. De'Anira Moore recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Keanna Kelly added 14 points with 12 coming via the 3-poitn line and Dezirae Hampton chipped in 10 points, five assists and five steals.
Black Hills came out in the first quarter and would lead through the first seven minutes. The Belles would not let BHSU lead by more than five points. Down 10-5 at the 5:08 mark, Hampton hit a layup and Daniels hit a jump to spark a 10-0 run. Moore gave ASU its first lead of the game with a jumper with 2:44 left in the first quarter and the scoring continued. A Mikayla Blount jumper made it 20-15. The Belles were up 22-17 but BHSU hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two. Â Dearria Watson responded with a jumper to close the quarter with ASU up 24-20.
A 3-pointer by Kelly opened the second quarter for Angelo State. BHSU responded with a 3-pointer of their own and anther Blount jumper moments later pushed the advantage back to seven at 31-24. An old fashioned three-point play from Moore at the 2:21 mark gave the Belles their largest lead of 13 points at 39-26. Black Hills State closed the quarter on an 8-2 run as ASU lead 41-34 at the break.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first five points of the quarter that made it a one possession game but Kelly drained one of her four 3-pointers to push the lead to 45-40 with 6:29 to go in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to one at 47-46 on one of 13 three pointers. A layup by Daniels with 3:58 to go started a 9-0 run highlighted with a 3-pointer from Blount to make it 56-46. BHSU would continue battling scoring the next four points until Ekiya Gray made a layup to close the third quarter with ASU on top 58-50.
Moore scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to make the advantage double-digits at 62-50. The two teams traded baskets with three point and four point spurts as the Belles would lead 69-56 with a pair of free throws from Daniels. The Yellow Jackets wouldn't quit outscoring ASU 8-1 over the next two minutes to trim the deficit to 70-64. Kelly answered with her third 3-pointer that started an 8-4 run and Kelly ended it with her fourth 3-pointer with 3:09 to play. The Belles wouldn't let BHSU get any closer for the final of 86-73.
