Baker Pitches Gem as Rams Split Doubleheader with Cameron

LAWTON, Oklahoma – The Angelo State baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader with Cameron, losing the first game 5-2 before winning the second matchup 3-0 behind a dominant outing from pitcher Trent Baker.

Baker threw his the first complete game of his collegiate career in the second game of the day, allowing no runs on just one hit in the game while striking out seven batters.

"I just can't say enough about Trent Baker and really the performance of several young guys today," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "Every time we've needed a big outing from him he's gone out there and done it. And then Trevor Moses had some key hits as well, so it's just good to see those young guys put the team on their back like that."

In game one, Cameron jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. With Shane Browning starting on the mound for the Rams, the Aggies uses a couple of singles and a stolen base to get a run across.

Angelo State quickly responded in the third inning. Catcher Alex Salcido sparked the rally with a single up the middle, with Elias Aguirre and Michael Urquidi following with singles of their own to load the bases.

Trevor Moses then drove in both Salcido and Aguirre with a two-run single before the Aggies were able to get out of the inning with the Rams up 2-1. It would be the final runs ASU scored in the first game.

The Aggies made their rally and retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth, with Browning still on the mound. Cameron scored three runs in the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Browning gave up one more run in the sixth inning, before being relieved by Logan Teske. He ended the day with five strikeouts, but allowed five runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings.

ASU went down in order in the top half of the seventh as Cameron closed out its first win over the Rams since May 12, 2016.

Trent Baker started game two on the mound for the Rams and continued his dominant season. Following the win, which was his fourth of the year, Baker is now second on the team with 39 strikeouts and has limited opponents to a batting average of just .147.

Baker worked back-to-back scoreless inning to start out the game before his offense gave him a lead. Aguirre sparked the run-scoring effort, working a four-pitch walk to start the inning and then moving himself into scoring position by swiping second base.

Urquidi followed with a walk of his own and both he and Aguirre moved up 90 feet when Moses laid down a sacrifice bunt. A ground ball from Andrew Morales scored Aguirre to put the Rams on the board.

Baker continued to stifle the Aggie batters, and Urquidi helped the freshman out with another run in the fifth inning. Urquidi blasted a solo home run to right field, doubling the ASU lead.

The only hit allowed by Baker in the game came in the sixth inning, as an Aggie batter reached on a bunt down the left field line.

Angelo State added one final insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning, again starting with Aguirre. The senior singled to start the inning and moved to second on a groundout from Urquidi. He then stole third and scored when Trevor Moses doubled down the left field line.

Jonathan Soberanes pinch ran for Moses and stole third as well, but was stranded there.

Baker closed out the game on his own, finishing out the complete game shutout and the win.

The Rams will finish out the series against the Aggies at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Lawton.
