No. 4 Rambelles Drop Series Opener to No. 20 Tarleton State

SAN ANGELO – The No. 4 Angelo State softball team dropped its LSC series opener with No. 20 Tarleton State 6-3 at Mayer Field on Friday night.

The Rambelles (29-5, 13-3 LSC) was held to five hits and just two after the first inning of play. The TexAnns (31-6, 13-6 LSC) recorded six runs on 11 hits including four runs in the fourth.

"We need to play better defensively," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We were able to get after Tarleton State early but couldn't put much together late when we needed it. We need to be ready to go because tomorrow is a big day."

Angelo State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to the bat of Courtney Barnhill. The sophomore crushed a ball to center field that hit the camera tower for her fourth home run of the season.

The TexAnns answered with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second. The Rambelles committed two errors in the inning that led to the two runs.

Danae Bina led off the second inning with a double down the left field line. The senior sat at third after a sacrifice bunt and Bailey Wallace drew a walk. Tarleton State threw down to try and pick off Bina at third but the ball sailed into the outfield to allow ASU to regain the lead at 3-2.

Morgan Hill would get the first two batters of the third and Taegan Kirk ended throwing out a TexAnn trying to steal third base for the final out of the inning.

Tarleton State had a big fourth inning with four runs on four hits including a three-run home run from Nyka Wood to put TSU up 6-3.

The Rambelles would only get a baserunner on in the sixth with a walk but Bina would be thrown out at second after singling to right center.

Hill picks up her fourth loss of the year giving up six runs, four earned, on nine hits. Brandy Marlett threw three scoreless innings in relief and struck out four.

The Rambelles & TexAnns will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The doubleheader can be heard locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
