CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Angelo State tennis team saw its season end Friday afternoon at the Lone Star Conference tournament as it fell to Texas A&M-Kingsville 5-4.
The Belles ended their first season of play since1986 with a 15-9 record and a 3-4 record against Lone Star Conference opponents.
ASU started off the match well enough, taking two of the three doubles points available. The court one doubles team set the tone, as Ena Ovcina and Maria Delgadillo jumped on top 5-2 and finished off the win 8-4 to get on the board.
On court three, Yasmine Ansari and Lucie Maitrot fell 8-5, but the Belles' court two pairing of Virginie Becht and Zoe Gubbels kept ASU in the lead with an 8-4 win.
Moving into singles play, the Javelinas took their first lead of the match as Ovcina and Becht lost in their respective matches. Gubbels quickly tied the match back up with a win on court four.
On court three, Ansari pushed her match down to the wire in a third set tiebreaker but came up just short in a loss.
Delgadillo earned the Belles another point on court two with a win of her own, forcing a deciding match on court six where Maitrot was locked in a third set battle.
Maitrot fell on the final court, and the Belles saw their season end.
