Rams Clinch Series Win With Doubleheader Sweep Saturday

ODESSA, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team won its fourth straight game and clinched a series win over UT Permian Basin Saturday afternoon, winning a pair of game 8-4 and 8-3.

The Rams (31-14, 12-7 LSC) collected 20 hits on the day to score their 16 runs while limiting the Falcons to just 10 in the two games combined.

"We were able to get up early in both games which was important for use," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "Broussard threw the ball well again and I was happy with the way the guys competed."

ASU got on the board early in the first game, scoring a pair of runs in the top half of the second. Mitch Henshaw led off with a single, advancing to third on a groundout and a passed ball. Jacob Boston then singled as well to bring Henshaw to the plate.

Boston stole second and advance to third on an error, scoring on a single from catcher Alex Salcido. The runs gave Austin Thomason, making his first career start for the Rams, an early lead.

Thomas pitched a scoreless second after the first two runs, and the Ram offense came through again in the third. Michael Urquidi worked a walk to lead off, and Nicholas Novak quickly doubled the score with a home run to right field.

The homer was the fifth of the season for Novak, who is now tied for the team lead.

UTPB got a run in the bottom of the third, knocking Thomason from the game as he was replaced by Josh Barnett.

Barnett finished the third and worked a scoreless fourth before the Rams scored another pair of runs in the fifth on singles from Trevor Moses, Boston and Parker Bramlett that pushed the lead to 6-1.

ASU scored again in the sixth as Elias Aguirre led off with a single, stealing second and then scoring on a Novak single.

The Falcons had their biggest inning of the day in the sixth, scoring three runs off of Logan Teske before Kellen Rholl came into finish the inning.

Angelo State added one final insurance run in the seventh on a single from Aguirre and Rholl slammed the door in the bottom of the inning for his ninth save of the year.

The Ram offense scored early again in the second game, getting a run in the first inning. Michael Urquidi led off with a hit-by-pitch and quickly scored as Novak and Bradley Mathiowetz hit back-to-back singles.

Urquidi led off in the third again and sparked another run-scoring effort for the Rams with a walk. He then stole second and advanced to third on a ground ball, scoring on a wild pitch. Moses then grounded out and scored Mathiowetz, giving ASU a 3-0 lead.

Three straight walks and a throwing error from the Falcon third basemen allowed three more runs to come across before the inning finally came to an end.

Shannon Broussard was working in his second career start at ASU and continued to shut down UTPB through the third. The Falcons scored their first run in the fourth after a triple and a ground ball, but Broussard allowed nothing further.

Moses led off the fifth, as the Rams scored their last two runs of the day. The Minnesota native singled, stole second and scored on a double from Boston. Boston then scored on a sacrifice fly from Joe Scott Pace.

Broussard continued working through the fifth and sixth, allowing just two more runs in the sixth as the Rams were held scoreless.

Reliever Jordan Wekewa came in to pitch the seventh, finishing off the Falcons and securing the doubleheader sweep for the Rams.

Angelo State will go for the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
