No. 10 Rambelles Sweep Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 10 Angelo State softball team secured a sweep of Midwestern State with a 3-1 extra inning victory on Saturday in Wichita Falls.

The Rambelles (33-6, 17-4 LSC) were able to draw five walks, four in the eighth inning, and recorded six hits in the game. The Mustangs fall to 13-19, 7-17 LSC and left 10 runners stranded on base.

"It was a huge win in tough conditions," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "That game could be the difference in winning a conference championship. Both teams played well defensively and all three pitchers threw well which was surprising with the weather. It was an exciting game to watch despite the conditions."

The game was tied at one in the bottom of the seventh inning and Midwestern State had runners at first and second. Morgan Hill was in the circle in relief of Brandy Marlett who only allowed one run on five hits through the first six innings.

A sacrifice bunt and intentional walk loaded the bases with only one out. Hill got a grounder ball hit to Danae Bina. The senior fired it home for the first out and Taegan Kirk got the double play to end the inning.

The Rambelles would use plate discipline to take the lead Taylor Fogle, Mykayla Stroud, Bina all walked to load the bases with just one out for Brooke Mangold. The Castroville native battled to a full count and took ball four to give ASU the lead. Madison Greenwell added a second run with a RBI sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

"We knew they loved to work inside and down," Scott said. "We did a good job of not chasing especially in the eighth. Brook Mangold laid off a couple of pitches out of the zone that she chased and struck out on in the at-bat before and she was able to get the RBI walk for the winning run."

Hill closed out the game after a leadoff walk with three straight ground balls for her 16th win of the season. The Salado native would not give up a hit in 2.0 innings of work.

ASU grabbed the first lead of the game on a solo home run by Kirk. The junior had three home runs in the series.

The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI double. After the double, MSU would be held to just one hit over the final four innings.

The Rambelles will return to Mayer Field for a three-game LSC series against UTPB starting on Friday, April 13.
