KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team lost in the series finale against Texas A&M-Kingsville 9-5 Sunday afternoon, dropping the series three games to one.
The Rams (27-12, 7-5 LSC) gave up eight runs on 11 hits and committed two errors in the loss.
"Today was a disappointing end to a disappointing weekend," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "Hopefully it's something we can learn from and we get better from here."
TAMUK jumped on the board early while Angelo State starter Josh Barnett was still on the mound. After a scoreless first from both teams, the Javelinas struck with a leadoff homer to get on the board. They then loaded the bases with one out and the quickly cleared them with a three-run triple, knocking Barnett from the game with the Rams I a 5-0 hole.
ASU got one run back in the top of the second after back-to-back doubles from Trevor Moses and Nicholas Novak, but were unable to push across anything more.
The Javelinas added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with one runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off Barnett's replacement Andrew Croucher.
Texas A&M-Kingsville then scored again in the fifth inning, putting the Rams down by six runs, which was the largest margin all game.
The Rams cut into the lead in the sixth inning, loading the bases with two outs before Andrew Morales laced a single to right field to score Novak and Parker Bramlett. A flyout from catcher Alex Salcido ended the threat with ASU still down 7-3.
TAMUK responded again in the bottom half of the inning with another two runs, putting the Rams back down by six.
Angelo State tried to rally one more time in the seventh inning, putting two on with one out as Michael Urquidi reached on an error and Novak walked. Both players would come into score, but the rally did not hold up as Bramlett struck out to end the inning with ASU still down 9-5.
The 9-5 score held for the final three innings, as the Javelinas held on for their first series win over Angelo State since 2016.
ASU will now have a bye week before facing their next opponent, Eastern New Mexico, April 20-22 at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
