SAN ANGELO, TX – The Angelo State Rams came into game two between them and the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals with a bad taste in their mouth from the night before. Strong performances on the mound and timely hitting would prove to be the recipe for success for ASU as they would go on to win game two of the three game series 4-1, moving to 7-3 on the year.
ASU wouldn't wait to score in the early afternoon game, scratching across their first run in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Williams reached based by singling to the right side and then advancing a base himself by stealing second. The baton would be passed to Lachlan Mayo with Williams in scoring position, and Mayo would deliver. The Sydney Senior would get a pitch on the outer half of the plate and drive it to right center field, scoring Williams for the first run of the game.
The Rams would manufacture their second run of the game in the second inning. Riley Peterson would lead things off by singling on a line drive to left field. He would be followed by Parker Bramlett being hit by a pitch, placing runner on first and second for Michael Urquidi. Urquidi would then make use of his nursing education and lay down a surgical bunt that landed him safely on first, juicing the bases for Jordan Williams. Williams sent a ball high in the air to center field that would be caught, but it was hit deep enough to bring in a run making the score 2-0 Rams. The Chaparrals would induce two flyouts to limit the damage to just one run.
Angelo State once again returned to their scoring ways in the fifth inning where Jackson Hardy and Josh Elvir were both walked. Riley Peterson would follow up Elvir by hitting a flyball out that would move Hardy to third. Hardy and Elvir would each advance on a wild pitch, resulting in the Rams; third run of the game and placing Elvir on third. Parker Bramlett stepped up to the plate and drove a frozen rope to right field and bringing in the Rams' Final run of the game, making the score 4-0.
The Chaps finally found themselves on the board in the eighth, but it would prove to be too little and too late as an Andres Negron double for an RBI would be their first and last time to score in the game.
Jordan Williams, Lachlan Mayo, and Riley Peterson would all finish the game with two hits.
Trent Baker (2-1) picked up where he left off in Laredo by throwing 7.1 innings and giving up only four hits and one run. The Georgetown sophomore struck out eight and only walked one. Baker found success in being able to locate his fastball that run up to 93 mph paired with a sharp breaking ball that left LCU hitters coming up empty on their swings.
Nick Coffman would enter for the final 1.2 innings of the showdown and give up only one hit and strike out two of the six batters that he faced. Coffman also earned his first save of the year with his closing performance.
The final game of the series will be played tomorrow, February 16th, at 1 p.m.
